Conception

When's the best time to get pregnant? Use our interactive ovulation calculator to work out when you're most fertile and most likely to conceive.

New to this and can't work out if this is weirdly late ovulation...

This is our first month of properly ttc (as opposed to last couple months of tossing out contraception and just having a bit of a bash at it) and I'm all geared up with the ovulation sticks etc... Been doing the sticks since CD11 last week and no sign yet of ovulation. Today is CD17 and it's still a negative result on the stick...

Have I missed something or is it perfectly possible not to ovulate until this late (or later) in cycle? My cycles are usually lovely and regular (28 days) BUT only when I am on medication for my prolactinoma. Have been off that medication for last 6 months and my last cycle was hopelessly out-of-sync (more like 40 days). So I assume this could be the reason for what I think is fairly late ovulation? I'm back on the meds now so my cycles will regularise again but I just wondered if it is normal, even within a 28 day cycle, for ovulation to take place after CD 17...?

Thanks for any advice - this is all Greek to me at the moment and trying to get my head around it a bit...

Ah - just done some research elsewhere on MN and it looks like I am being an idiot to be relying on these tests actually working... plus I have been doing them in the am (like a pg test) and didn't realise it is meant to be more effective in the pm... Arrrrgh. Back to the drawing board I guess.

I wasted two months on those tests and gave them up for simple maths, good luck!

My cycle is about 32 days and I tend to ovulate on day 17/18. I did use the sticks, mainly so I could gain a better knowledge of my cycle, ovulation dates and luteal phase. Now I know I've chucked them out, it's quite heart wrenching peeing on sticks every day, knowing you dtd at the correct time and then getting a bfn at the end! I'm hoping my chilled out, non peeing on stick ways will help this month!! :)

Good luck!!

Thanks wrigle... I think they're a double-edged sword actually, these OPK tests, because they give (control freak Wink) people like me a sense of control but actually it may not be a worth it... I guess simple maths is best - at the mo I'm just trying to make sure my cycle is as reg as possible by going back on my meds for prolactinoma as with an irregular cycle it just feels impossible to work it all out...

Thank you Happilymarried... I'm just like you, I think, trying VERY VERY HARD to be chilled out and not try to hard.... Wink

It's tough, though, isn't it, when you're used to being able to control things in life (or at least enjoy the illusion of control!) and then you start this process and you realise it's a lot down to Mother Nature... I'm already disheartened from peeing on sticks ffs and I've only done it about 6 days!!

I used them this cycle for the first time and didn't get anything close to a positive which could mean three things:

  1. I didn't ovulate this month (probably the most likely as I'm temping as well and my temp patters were very strange this month)
  2. They just don't work for me (seems to be a common occurrence)
  3. I'm not doing the test right (I can't test at the recommended time as peeing in a cup and waiting 30 min. until it cools down to test at work is not on)

I'll try again this month as I have them now but I'm a bit disillusioned with them.

Hi, you have to make sure that you are not drinking too much before you take an ovulation test i think at least two hours before but i cant remember now. If you have a 40 day cyle then you are probably not ovulating until around day 23+.

You will see the line get darker and once it starts to get darker a lot of people test twice a day say at around 10 am and then 9 pm to catch the peak. You could just buy the clearblue fertility monitor which takes all the guess work out but it is a tad expensive.

I'd agree with happily - try them for a couple of months but don't rely on them, they should give you an understanding of your cycle but that's all as every cycle can vary a little. Dtd every other day-ish through your cycle, be more regular from cd10 to cd20 and you should hit the mark without the pressure iykwim.

medusa I am disappointed in your defeatism, what do you mean you can't leave pots of pee around the workplace? Tut tut Grin
