anxiety, thyroid problem, inconclusive doc test, poas all bfp

Hi,

I think I just need to write this down.

Has anyone had positive poas (digital said 4-5 at exactly 4 wks though cycle usually 25-27) but then had 'inconclusive' urine test at docs? This was Wednesday.

I have an underactive thyroid and I know I will more than likely have to raise meds early and asap. I really need to get into the system asap. I will be handing in another urine sample first thing Monday morning and assume results back on tues.

My anxiety ( which I do suffer from but have been doing well with) stems from being unclear at how long it then takes to see the midwife, (who I believe takes bloods? Does this inc thyroid screen?) who I've been told would be referring to endocrinology.

Basically I need that blood test asap and am worried will be in 6th wk by the time I get referred?

I was lucky enough to go to a thyroid foundation meeting on sat, the wonderful organiser contacted a consultant who said get in the system asap.

I wonder if I should make a docs appt for next week to insist the automatic referral or at least the blood test?

I luckily got a test 3 wks ago to check levels before ttc - did NOT expect it this cycle! Tsh 1.57 which is good, no idea about t4. Im on 125mg, but was on 125/150 last year so have decided to do that while I wait - current guidelines say go up 25 but of course I feel uneasy doing it - and uneasy not! Consultant said I would have to go up but based on bloods obviously. He also apparently praised my awareness!

In reality what I think is actually happening is my anxiety is spiraling. I was on beta blockers till Xmas for anxiety though have been well for over a year. Had to stop for ttc. The way I feel now I really need one!

Any advice / thoughts please?

Hi, I don't know what to say except I had an underactive thyroid and wasn't nearly as proactive as you.... didn't get my blood tested until well after 12 weeks, when they raised my thyroxine immediately.

Anyway, it was OK. Try not to panic - you are on the meds that your body needs and they will be raised in good time, given that you are onto it.

If you think its your anxiety then maybe sit and do some deep breathing, counting slowly for each breath. Good luck.

Thank you Oscarlito, ive been sobbing for hours, so annoyed I let it get the better of me. Unless its hormones! Very panicky.

I just worry about this 'inconclusive' thing, its all the bloody uncertainty that's unsettling me. Feel better about thyroid thing, though thanks xx

It could well be the hormones Smile

My baby was fine & I got myself into a panic when I realised I hadn't had my dose increased.

Yes, could be hormones too - not getting massive symptoms though, just slightly off food, breast tenderness (and bigger!) And odd cramps from tome to time. But then I never have anything with AF either, except occasional moodiness!

It's the lack of confirmation at the docs that's triggered it all as I know i need this to get referred. I am going to make an appt for weds and ask for referral directly to endocrinology if result positive, rather than waiting for midwife to do.

How are you doing oscarlito? Have you found ttc and pregnancy adversely affected by thyroid? Glad they sorted it for you xx

Don't panic :)
When your bfp comes back, ask your GP to run your thyroid bloods - you don't need to wait to book in with the midwife.

I know other people have been advised to increase meds by 25 when trying (ie before conception) in order to cover the first few weeks. Can you call consultant's secretary and ask? You have room for manoeuvre on tsh
This is my non medical opinion of course

Clarella · 25/03/2012 19:30

Thanks mercibucket and mcpopcorn, yes I too read about the + 25 and the message from the consultant was I would definitely need to go up based on bloods but very likely. I have decided to go back to 125/150 for the last few days - very minor increase as the norm and advice seems to be +25/50 when pregnancy confirmed. I suppose I feel uneasy as its not official, my DH really wanted me to go up 25. My Tsh is low ish though so I guess ok. Thanks for the advice, I will demand an immediate blood test at docs on bpf!

Seems obvious, I just worry about the 'no you can't ' bit but many that's the worry talking! Fun fun fun!

Thanks all, much calmer now Xx

I'm doing fine now thanks. Once I got the underactive thyroid diagnosed by my GP I conceived within a few months & had a healthy baby & normal pregnancy.
Now trying to make another one Smile

hope it all goes well for you
