Ovulating with every cycle?

TTC baby number 2 and no luck so far (DS1 is now 16 months).

I remember when we conceived him I got a very strong pain in my side which I knew was ovulation, as he was conceived that night (going on scan dates and presence of EWCM). He took a while to come along due to underactive thyroid and irregular cycle ie 18 months of solid TTCing.

Have also had that pain a few other times that I remember, but not every cycle. When it comes it's really bad, I've been to the doctor about it when younger (and more of a hypochondriac).

Now I'm wondering if this means I only ovulate when I get that pain, and the rest of the time I'm not releasing an egg. I know ovulation is a tricky thing to pin down and there may not be an answer until/if I get pregnant again, but it's on my mind and I though maybe someone would know or have had the same experience.

Now on 1WW and been through about 4 OPKs which were all showing HCG in varying degrees....

thanks for any thoughts/accounts of similar experiences

Do you temp? Apparently it's the only reliable way to know for sure if you've ovulated or not, whereas opks just show there's a hormone surge but not if you actually release an egg.

I had ov pain last cycle and my temp dropped at the same time so I know I ov'd. Might be worth a shot

Thanks chips will have a think about that. I do have an ear thermometer for the baby so could give it a shot. Next step is just going to the doctor and asking for clomid...

Still waiting to see if anything happened this month so fingers crossed it won't be necessary.

Oscalito,

You need to buy a basic clinical thermometer from the chemist; do not use an ear thermometer. Blood tests would give a far more accurate picture of hormone levels than temp charting (which is not totally without problems either).

Is your underactive thyroid now under control; it may well be worth having blood tests done now to see if this is within normal levels particularly in the event this has not been monitored for some time. An underactive thyroid too will cause your periods to go irregular as well. Would also refrain from using the OPKs if your thyroid is not working correctly either as it can give false readings (OPKs measure LH hormone, not HCG).

Clomid should not be prescribed unless there is definitive proof you are not ovulating. Also you should not take this without being monitored thoroughly so it should be prescribed by a gynae. It is not suitable for all women to take.

You need a bbt thermometer (basal body temp) i got mine off amazon for £4.99 it needs to show .00. Fertility friend is a good site for learning about it.

Good luck seeing the dr

Thanks attila. I did have my thyroid tested a few months back & the doc raised my dosage to 150mg a day of thyroxine. Now feeling OK.

Also still breastfeeding - reluctant to wean as although he's now 16 months he doesn't seem ready & it gives us sleep at night. I know that may be affecting ovulation too so I should try to wean but just don't have the will right now.

I told the GP (who is also a gynae) my history and given that I'm 37 this year and it took so long last time he was prepared to prescribe Clomid. Haven't pursued it yet as I am still hoping it will happen naturally and am scared of having twins (they would be lovely but I just don't think I'm cut out for more than 2 children).

Will check out fertility friend as well chips

Thanks for all your advice. Fingers crossed.
