Most people are most fertile on about day 15, taking day 1 as the first day of your period.
You're fertile for a couple of days either side of ovulation.
Do you take your temperature each morning before getting up? That's the most effective way of finding your own fertile time.
Chart your temperature each morning before you get out of bed. On the day you ovulate it will drop by about 0.5 degree. That's your most fertile day.

It's not strictly true. If you have regular 4 week cycles then yes you roughly ovulate, and are therefore fertile around two weeks into your cycle. If you have irregular cycles then that rule may mean you are completely missing ovulation. I found reading Taking Charge Of Your Fertility really helped my understand how my cycles worked with or without charting. They have a website www.tcoyf.com but all the info is in the book.

OP, that's only true for the average person having an average length cycle. You generally ovulate 12-16 before your NEXT period. So if you have long or short cycles, 2 weeks after your lmp is likely to be wrong.

I have very irregular cycles, often lasting 6 weeks or more. Last month I managed to ovulate on day 8. It really depends on the woman. With such long cycles and often anovultory cycles, I definitely don't ovulate 2 weeks after my last period.

To echo Ruthchan, temping helps to pinpoint when you have ovulated. We aim to have sex every other day for the first few weeks (I also track my CM which when egg white or watery tells me when I amidst fertile). That way if/when I do ovulate I can at least be sure that there is sperm in there. Whether I release an egg though is another story completely.

The book I'm reading says, as a rough guide... Take a note of the first day of your period for the last 6 cycles. Your shortest cycle minus 20 gives you you're first fertile day, and your longest cycle minus 10 gives you your lay fertile day.

So if your cycles are between 28 and 32 days, you will be fertile from day 8 to 22. If your cycles are always 28 days long, your fertile time is day 8 to 18 (and the average would be the text book day 14).

This method gives you a large enough window to ensure you cover your fertile time, OPK or temperature charting will give you a much more accurate window.

Hope this helps.

My best advice is to have sex three times every week. With this method it is almost impossible to miss the right time.

I would also recommend reading a good book about how your body works and recognising when you are fertile. Taking Charge of your Fertility gets good reviews round here.

If you have the money, a Clearblue Fertility Monitor might help you identify your high and peak fertility days. But if you have sex three times a week then the monitor doesn't really "add" much extra by way of improving your chances.

I learnt it all on here! Most people on here are more than willing to answer even silly questions, and give plenty of advice. Maybe try joining a group thread, like the rat smackers or the 10+ month - we're not strict on entry requirements.

There's loads of information on the internet!

I found this site useful
www.mymonthlycycles.com/ You input data about your periods and your fertility symptoms and so on.

It has a link on it to a site called "whenmybaby" and that takes your data from the website above and suggests when your best times to try that month are if you use the fertility calculator. In conjunction with ovulation testing it worked well for me.

Fertility Friends is another popular website for ttc.
