EWCM without ovulating?

OK so I haven't had periods for a long time, since conceiving DS who is now 18 months (he is still nursing a few times a day). 3 weeks ago I had a couple of days of EWCM, so I waited til 36 hours after it had stopped before having sex (we're not TTC no.2 at present). I was kind of convinced I would get my period last week due to the EWCM, which I believed was a sign of ovulation starting again, but it hasn't come.

So my questions are: 1) is it possible to have EWCM without ovulating? 2) is it possible to ovulate without then getting a period, and 3) if EWCM is a sign ovulation, is it possible to conceive 36 hours after EWCM stops?

I'd appreciate any advice on this. Thanks.

Gleaned from Taking Care Of Your Fertility 1) yes, ewcm is a sign your body is getting ready to ovulate, not that it definitely is or has. You can have more than one patch of ewcm per cycle if your body gets ready but then doesn't, for whatever reason. 2) if you do ovulate you will def have a period, unless you are pregnant. 3) yes, I think it is entirely possible to conceive 36hrs after ewcm stops, because ewcm isn't a sign that ov has definitely happened and egg is safely out of the way.

thanks quod. Hopefully the EWCM was my body just warming up for ovulation rather than a sign of definitely ovulating. It appears I have misunderstood the significance of EWCM - I thought it meant you WERE ovulating, rather than you were about to IYSWIM. Will send DH out for a HPT then because I feel utterly crap.
OK, thanks so much.

Hope you get the result you want namechchch, and sorry you're feeling rubbish! Our bodies need an indicator panel, don't they? I'd recommend that book I mentioned, it's a real eye opener and makes you realise how little we actually know about our own fertility/cycle/hormones.

I am also confused by this! I got EWCM and got my period but I apparently didn't ovulate according to the day21 test which I had 7 days after I saw EWCM

I'll check that book out thanks quod.

what is the day21 test prolific?

well DH has come back without the HPT :( so now obviously I'm convinced I'm pregnant (he's convinced I'm not and doesn't want to waste money on a test). I guess it'd be pretty unlikely but I DO feel knackered and twinge-y in my uterus and nauseous BUT I may just be imagining all this because I'm worried.

You see, DH doesn't understand that the HPT in times like this is as much about putting an end to hysterical fantasies as it is about finding out whether one is pregnant Grin

Sorry if this is totally out of order but if you're not TTC but are also unsure whether you're ov'ing or not and where your cycle is at, would it be worth using contraception from now on until you do want a pg?

Anyway, I hope you get the result you want and that you feel better soon.

namechchchchanges · 21/02/2012 15:53

ha ha beangrower no it's not totally out of order and yes you're right of course. I have already made it clear to DH that he needs to sort out some condoms if we are going to have sex again because I CBA with all the anxiety attached to unprotected sex.

I suppose the thing is I would be fine with another child whereas he doesn't want one. I've left it up to him to sort out the contraception and, although he knows I have not started my periods since DS was born, he also knows that this in itself does not mean I won't get pregnant. But from now on I think I will have to demand he uses condoms because if I AM getting ready to ovulate then unprotected sex would just lead to a whole minefield of anxiety - like this last week!

Yes - tell him to get the raincoat on his old feller. He's the one he doesn't want more beanlets! Grin

Sorry I should have been clearer.
It's a blood test that measures your hormone level that indicate if you have ovulated. I am having some trouble ovulating it would seem.

I agree r.e DH's and the extraordinary lack of understanding when it comes to HPT's.

Hope you get the result you want when you can test.
