Hello. I want to start measuring my temperature to tell when I?m ovulating. Do I need a special thermometer or can I use one that you stick in your ear? Also do I need to do it after 3 hrs sleep. Any tips please!

you really need one that measures to 2 decimal places. You can get a digital one from amazon for a few pounds. search for BBT thermometer. I think you need to take the temp orally or vaginally or rectally. Most accurate. google fertility friend. It has all the info you will ever need to chart, including an app.

Temping will only confirm for you that you have ovulated. It won't tell you in advance, unless you are very regular and have charted for some time. To predict when ovulation is going to occur you need to check cervical mucous and maybe think about OPKs. Again, see the FF website.

There is a book called Taking charge of your fertility that is a useful read too. I used the temping method when TTC DC3. It was successful for me. Good luck.

I agree that it's best to use a basal thermometer accurate to 2 decimal places. The temp changes are relatively subtle so you need one as accurate as possible.

I use fertility friend to record my temps and other fertile signs. It's free although you can pay for additional services.

Hi Carrott

When I was TTC DS I used a digital thermometer and took my temp vaginally every morning when I woke up (before I even got up to have a wee or anything). I had a chart I got from doc and it really helped me to understand my monthly cycle as I had always thought you ovulate around day 14 and it turns out I ovulate on day 23! DS was conceived a month after starting the whole temp/charting sheebang, so good luck to you, hope it helps.

Hi Carrot, just to add that toni weschler who wrote the taking charge of your fertility has a website that you might find interesting.

Boots also do a fertility thermometer. You need to have it right by your bed and barely move before you take it! I took it orally. Fertility friend is a godsend as you just input all your info and it sorts it out and deciphers it for you. It even uses previous months to shade in green your probable most fertile days. I would heartily recommend it. It is free but you can pay for extra features which I ended up doing 2nd time around.
