TTC with PCOS

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 14/02/2012 15:33

I have not yet seen a thread completely dedicated to PCOS sufferers. I was diagnosed with PCOS in November and have been TTC since Junw 2011 with no success. My cycles are long and anovultory (longest so far 77 days). My last cycle I did manage to ovulate (yey) but have a sneaking suspicion that it may have been a chem because i did get 3 very light positives and then had a very weird period.

Anyway, just wondered if there were other sufferers out there that wanted to share their thoughts, wise words, rants and ways of coping/getting to that shiny BFP!!!

I too have PCOS and am TTC#1. I've been on Metformin a while, which has regulated my cycle really well, and have just started Clomid this cycle, so fingers crossed.

I really want a BFP Sad

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 14/02/2012 15:48

I am under the care of the consultant NatashaBee but am waiting for DH to submit another SA and get my appointment for a HSG. He won't give me Clomid until I have had the HSG. Kind of frustrating as there is a waiting list for the HSG at the moment.

Oh Pippi I do hope that you get that BFP this cycle. I know how you feel, after finally ovulating last month I thought that maybe things might be settling down, but I am not sure if I have ovulated this month, as FF keeps changing it's mind and removing my crosshairs.

It sure is an emotional rollercoaster!!! I too am TTC#1 and it's starting to get me down.

I have PCOS too. Have been TTC since 1 yr and haven't had a period for 3 months now. Am awaiting an appointment to discuss fertility tx. Have already had my HSG. FX for u pippi.

I m struggling with weight loss as well.

Mooleywooley hopefully u wil get an appointment soon

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 15/02/2012 07:28

NatashaBee your story gives me so much hope, that it is possible and it can happen :)

Vanfurgstan I never used to struggle with weight loss, but have noticed in the past few years the weight creeping up but just attributed it to being with DH and being comfortable after several failed diets I just gave up. I was also on Cerezette so never really thought it could have anything to do with fertility. How naive I was :) Fx that you ger your appointment soon.

I too am struggling with weight loss, it seems the TTC gets me down, then I eat, which doesn't help the TTC, which gets me down, then I eat, and so on.

I am supposed to have a HSG, but am supposed to ring the dept that does it on the first day of my next period, but as I'm taking Clomid I don't want to waste a month on Clomid, so not going to take the Clomid on the month that have the HSG done.

Don't think I have any problems there, as we have been pregnant 3 times before, but had mc's for all, consultant says that taking Metformin until end of 1st trimester would bring MC risk down from 62% to that of a "normal" woman Hmm

Vanfurgstan · 15/02/2012 17:32

Aww pippi that must be heart breaking for you. HSG is just a precautionary measure as occluded tubes r not very common. Hopefully it shd work out for you.
I have struggled with weight since early teens and last year I had my BMI down to 23. Then I stopped moving and ate horrible food so it has increased and am now 26 :( again. It's a hard battle

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 15/02/2012 17:44

Van I hear you. I got my weight down, was doing really well and then...Bang! It's right back up again.

Pip that is frustrating. Hope that you can get it all sorted and that you won't need the HSG because the Clomid will help you win that bean :)

mooley I know, still no AF, so am testing tomorrow, as have to go to chemist anyway, so will pick up stick TPO when I'm there!!

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 16/02/2012 11:51

Oooh Pip exciting have everything crossed for you.

I POAS this morning and thought that there was a hint of a line but not entirely sure. It was almost like a shadow, so I am putting it down to a evap/ghost line/eyes playing tricks. I am either 10dpo or 13dpo (FF can't seem to make up it's mind) but I have EWCM this morning when i checked Confused - did not have this at this stage last month, so not sure what to think!

pippilongsmurfing · 17/02/2012 10:45

Ok, have bought test!!

Will update!!

mooley that is weird, but apparently sometimes after (like the day after) sex you can get what looks like ewcm bit isn't iyswim?

Got everything cross for you too! Smile

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 18/02/2012 10:31

Oooh good luck Pip fingers crossed for you!!

Not had any SWI for a whole do def not semen!

POAS again this morning and I'm certain that there is the faintest of faint lines, but it is really really faint, so much so that I have to shine a light on it, so not entirely convinced that it's real. Will obviously test again in the morning!!

Annoyingly though, I have friends visiting tonight, which ultimately means drinking and in not sure what to do!! I can't not drink because they'll ask questions but at the same time I can't really drink too much because of potential upset to potential bean!!

FjordMor · 18/02/2012 13:05

Hi MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong and others.

I wanted to share my story in case it might be helpful to anyone. I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 24 after suffering wildly fluctuating cycles (sometimes 50 days, then 19 days etc.). Nobody gave me much advice or information but I was put on the pill. At around 35 I decided to come off the pill and I was anxious for what would happen with my cycle as obviously, on the pill, I had been regular for a very long time & I wanted to see how my PCOS 'was' & what my potential fertility might be as my age was marching on Wink.

After doing some research, I decided to take Agnus Castus drops as it was a herb recommended to even out the cycle and I took it from day 1 coming off the pill. I also started following the Low GI diet to help my blood sugar levels. What happened? From month 1 my cycle was regular 27 days for 3 months (I stopped the AC after 3 or 4 months I think) then evened out to 30 then 28 after that and was regular ever since. At an ultrasound scan to check if I had fibroids (I'm now 41 and I do - that's another story Wink) last year, I was told that I 'no longer have PCOS' (no cysts could be seen) and that sometimes it does just 'disappear' in the late thirties (which I did not know was possible). This was quite a shock & obviously this doesn't happen for everyone but I do believe in the Agnus Castus for helping regulate the cycle and whilst I am not a qualified practitioner or in any position to give expert advice, I do think it's worth investigating herbs etc. Also I found out recently (through research online) that ovarian 'stock' does not age so rapidly in women with PCOS, making it in fact, technically easier for women with PCOS to concieve at a later age than other women, provided the symptoms can be brought under control and ovulation achieved humrep.oxfordjournals.org/content/19/10/2175.full

The happy side to this is that after spending the last two decades thinking I'd need serious help to ever get pregnant, and having only found the love of my life aged 39, I have just got pregnant at 41 after 2 months of trying naturally. I feel extraordinarily lucky & am keeping my fingers crossed that I'm not still carrying the additional MC risk of my previous PCOS as well as my age but I just wanted to highlight that this is a condition that can change course and can be brought under control, even without medical intervention. Don't lose hope. Keep trying new things :)

(I found this book extremely helpful - www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-PCOS-Handbook-fertility-self-esteem/dp/0007213255/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329569240&sr=1-1 .)

x2boys · 19/02/2012 09:32

hi i have pcos always suspected i did as i have ridiculous cycles i can go up to six months without a period i have unwanted hair and i,m overweight however when we deceided to try for a baby i was extremely lucky in that i conceived within 5/6 weeks with ds1 who is now 5 .When ds1was about eighteen months we deceided to try again. after 6 months trying i went to gp due to my symptons he referred me for a scan and blood tests which showed pcos we carried on trying for a futher six months and i got pregnant naturally with ds2 who is nearly two i know how very lucky i am but wanted to say it can happen good luck

Balderdabble · 19/02/2012 09:48

Hi. Thought I'd add my story. Like a few of you we're TTC for the first time. I have PCOS but have no AFs at all. Doc wants us to keep trying before she'll refer us on which I would understand if I had long or irregular cycles but as I'm clearly not ovulating at all, I really don't see what the point in waiting is - not ovulating, can't conceive as far as I'm concerned! GP also says she can't prescribe clomid/metformin, it has to come from fertility clinic. Is that everyone else's experience?

pippilongsmurfing · 19/02/2012 13:33

Tested yesterday (Sat) and got a BFN, but still no AF, and all my pre AF symptoms have disappeared, so bit confused about what's going on, and I just don't feel "right" iykwim?

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 19/02/2012 13:46

Ooooh Pip sounds promising! You could test again in the morning. Some women don't get a positive until a week after AF was due! Am keeping everything crossed for some good news!! :)

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 19/02/2012 13:48

Bladder I have to wait to get Clomid from my consultant, I don't think GPs give it out.

Fjord and X2 thank you for your positive stories, it's really good to hear that not only is conception possible naturally but that PCOS can be over come!!!

OP posts:
pippilongsmurfing · 19/02/2012 14:20

Do you think so mooley, I'm new at all this TTC with "problems" and thought if you didn't get a BFP the day you should have had your period, then that was it and it was a BFN for good.

I will wait a few days and retest! Thanks for the advice Smile

Vanfurgstan · 19/02/2012 21:33

Balderdabble I cud have written that myself. No periods and the GP said keep trying for at least a year. I waited for 6 mnths before I went again and a different one referred me straight away. I got the appointment with a consultant 2 mnths later.
