Hello all, sorry for the length of this! I am 35 in March and have just started trying to conceive our second baby. First son is 5. My cycle has always been very unpredictable, beginning first period at just under 15. It was very irregular between then and 19 when I went on the pill. Pill gave me no probs whatsoever. Came off pill at 26 and had two years of irregular periods til I was 28 and conceived my son. My pregancy was textbook apart from a small fibroid (4cm) which was discovered during the 12 weeek scan. This was monitored and gave me no problems.
I came off the pill in December 2010. We agreed that I would give myself a year to try and gaain a regular cycle before we'd start trying for our second. I found out a few months ago in October that I have another/ the same fibroid which is slightly larger (7cms). I had a follow up appointment two weeks ago and no action is being taken as the fibroid at that size and location is unlikely to give any problems.
So now we have the go ahead to try for our second and we are very excited!
However the problem is, I haven't had a period since the 5th November, 80 odd days ago. Since coming off the pill, all last year my cycle has been worse than ever! Just to show you the whole picture,
first period after stopping pill came 62 days later-totally undertstandable.
then 30days,then 51 days,then 38 days, then 34 days,
then 80 days then 46 days until 5th November and I'm still waiting.
I am very afraid that I am beginning early menopause or something. I don't want to be dramatic but we put off having a second baby for several reasons due to personal family circumstances and I'm afraid I've missed our chance. I did voice these thoughts to doctor at last gynae appointment and he shrugged it off and said with past history then it's probably just the way I'm made.
Does any one else have a cycle like this? And did you go on to conceive in your mid thirties? So sorry for this being so long- I hope it makes sense!
Thanks for reading!

Should also have added that obviously I have tested for pregnancy-repeatedly negative!

I've had a very similar cycle since starting menses at 14.

Not surprised either to see repeated negative tests:(.

Irregular cycles such as yours are more often than not caused by hormonal imbalances. Two possible causes for this include PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and or problems with the thyroid gland. Both can be looked for and determined via blood tests. PCOS is probably the most likely culprit here but the thyroid hormone levels should be checked properly as well.

Doc you saw at last gyane appt fobbed you off; I would seek a second opinion as a matter of course. It certainly warrants further investigation and sooner rather than later.

Hi saw you post and thought I would add something that the sonographer said to me while I was being scanned for fibroids, she said that the pill can make them bigger. Also when I pg a different sonographer said the same thing to me. Not sure if this will help you out, maybe not but it might explain why you fibroid is bigger. They grow off progesterone apparently.

I would deffinlity go back to the doc's and ask for a second opinion. Was it a female doctor? I found one doc I spoke to was very dismissive and then another I saw sent me for bloods, scans the lot to try and figure it out, my problem was prolonged bleeding of up to 41 days. (not very helpful when your ttc!)

Thank you for your reply Attila. I will make another appointment at the gp this week. I did mention pcos at the last gynae appointment and he said it could be a consideration but from the "look" of me I am fine!!!!!!!! Thought that was an odd wa
y to rule something out-I look fine????????
I am now away to google problems with thyroid! I hadn't considered that. Forewarned is forearmed and all that! Thanks again xxx

Thank you too Fanjo! Your situation sounds like it would be hard going! Hope you are getting on better now. It was a young chap I saw, he was very nice but yes, dismissive of what I thought could be a genuine issue. However as he also told me to just get on with trying to concieve and ignore the fibroid I was just so exited about that! I should have pushed the rubbish cycle issue a bit more. Thanks for your replies ladies, kind of you to take the time x

I'd guess they meant you had no extra hair or acne - but you can PCOS without those symptoms :)

teaandchocolate · 30/01/2012 16:11

Just wanted to say that I also had very irregular cycles - I had about 2 periods in the year after I came off the pill. I was diagnosed with pcos a few years ago and also don't 'look' like I have it - not overweight/overly hairly etc so I would definitely query your doctor. However, I also wanted to say that despite hardly ovulating I managed to get pregnany pretty easily and went on to have my DD. I was 30 at the time so don't have direct experience of ttc in mid 30s but hope it will give you some hope. However, I would certainly go back to the doctor and push for some blood tests and if you are diagnosed with pcos or thyroid issues there are certainly things you can do. But even if you only ovulate irregularly you are still ovulating and can still get pregnant!

Hi, my cycles are crazy like yours too, i was diagnosed with pcos, if i was you i would ask for some blood tests, after coming off the pill i had 42,48,70 day cycles and then this one which i am now on day 168. its so fustrating as hardly any chance of me getting pregnant, waiting for my fertility appointment now. I hope you manage to find to get answers soon xx

popcornmouse- that's what I thought he meant-not showing the typical outward signs. I'll get a second opinion and ask for blood tests- thanks xxx
