soya milk affecting fertility??

Hi,

I'm 31 and been TTC for 6 months.
DH is 34. We're both healthy weight, active lifestyle and don't smoke. We have a DS 22months so we know we are able to produce a baby! (He was conceived very easily).

As it has been 6 months now i have started to analyse a bit and was wondering if we should give up drinking. (we probably each have about 2 bottles per week which i think is 20 units). I didn't want to as we enjoy it but it seems 20 units is quite a lot, although i didn't feel as a couple we drank that much!

I then read that apparently soya milk can affect fertility.... We drink gallons of the stuff but didn't when DS was made!

Anyone else got any experience/thoughts on this?

I am hoping i have found the answer!! Of course it may just be that our much longed for DC2 is taking a while!

I've not heard of soy having a negative impact on fertility per say, but I know soy can interfere with your thyroid function, and an underactive thyroid can impact conception? (sorry, bit of a tenuous link there!)

I went to the GP a few weeks back and they told me my 20 units a week was "far too much". So far I haven't managed to cut it down though I know I should Blush :(

iloveberries · 18/01/2012 13:40

hi popcorn sounds like we should definitely cut down our drinking then (sob)

I have heard about soy affecting fertility. One veggie friend got pg after some time trying after cutting it down/out. That might just be coincidence though.

iloveberries · 18/01/2012 16:04

interesting ladies, thank you...

even if it won't help i feel positive that moving from soya milk to dairy will give me something to focus on in this horrible TTC 'journey'. I know it is supposed to be fun but it's not really is it???

It's fun for the first month or two when it is exciting and new and you are thinking about all the possibilities. After that it is just shit.

PopcornMouse · 18/01/2012 16:37

Well said euro I couldn't agree moar.

iloveberries · 18/01/2012 19:41

completely agree... it was fun for a month and then the novelty of timed sex wore off and everyone around me is positively knocked up knocked up knocked up. sob

Interesting. I had heard things about soya. Does it affect both sexes, does anyone know? MrA is a vegetarian and, being such a lame cook, I tend to use a lot of TVP products.

Quorn isn't soya though is it?

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/01/2012 20:11

Oh bloody hell I'm allergic to dairy so I have soya, now I have to buy Kara milk dont I?

FFS.

Ok, is there anything else I dont know about? Zita DID not mention it in her assisted conception book

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/01/2012 20:16

I need a like button for eurochick's 16:28 post.

I read something similar a few months back. Also something recently (although can't remember where?) about men in the southeast being affected by the amount of oestrogen in tap water. Apparently it's not filtered for these hormones (from the urine of women on the pill) during the other filtration processes and it's having a negative impact on fertility.

Seriously though, if you read every article and followed it's advice you'd not eat or drink anything. Bit of an exaggeration but I feel like it

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/01/2012 20:18

Maybe cutting everything out and making ourselves miserable affects fertility? maybe getting blind drunk and eating cake 24/7 is the way to go.

I dunno.

ArielNonBio · 18/01/2012 20:19

Terrific. Now is this water only a south eastern thing, or is it in the south west also?

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/01/2012 20:30

Getting blind drunk after consuming the best part of a bottle of whisky to myself worked for dd fluffycloud Grin

Ariel, I would assume that the issue is throughout the UK, but as the concentration of the population is highest in London that's where they focused on as it was the most news worthy.

ArielNonBio · 18/01/2012 20:36

Would a Britta filter work? Grin

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/01/2012 20:50

Ha! Compared to the huge filtration devices they use at the treatment plants? Why yes of course!
Have you seen the Aunty Mable poo episode?

It might all be an utter load of tripe, but there has to be something for us to worry about right?!

ArielNonBio · 18/01/2012 20:52

Oh there's so much to stress about.

I read a book which told me not to go near a microwave, not to use paint, or washing powder, or tampons, or eat cooked food. Et cetera.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/01/2012 20:55

So maybe whisky should be advised along with B12?

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2012 21:07

I have used soya milk instead of dairy milk for about 8 or 9 years and have had 2 DC in this time (no other pg),pg first cycle both times, despite being in late 30s/early 40s. DH and I barely drink, and gave up drinking when ttc and we live in Yorkshire, so no probs with oestrogen in water afaik. I've always been convinced that the reason for our quick conceptions was not drinking wine rather than drinking soya milk.

ArielNonBio · 18/01/2012 21:13

Wine? What about beer? Spirits?

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2012 21:49

LOL! Wine is my choice of poison, but I was off all booze when TTC.

goldmaple · 19/01/2012 00:03

Just wanted to say that I consume a fair bit of soy (5 dinners a week - DH is vegetarian) and I just had a baby in Oct. neither DH or myself drink much alcohol though. I think everyone reacts differently, if it changed your cycle then I would stop.

iloveberries · 19/01/2012 09:43

interesting to hear all the views. We are going to cut out the soya milk... it doesn't seem to have affected my cycles at all but it could have had an effect on DH swimmers..... Anyway, along with cutting down out alcohol it'll make me feel we are doing something positive.

As for the water thing.... it could well be true but i won't be buying gallons of evian and giving up tap yet!

Good Luck everyone....

eurochick i recognise you from previous threads, good luck to you and so hope you get your BFP soon :)
