Snowboarding while TTC?

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/01/2012 11:16

Is is a good idea?
Finally getting around to doing something I have wanted to do for ages - 2 whole months of snowboarding - so I can finally get really good rather than the 1 week a year when I don't really progress and get much better. So this means I will be pushing myself, both emotionally and physically!

We have not been TTC so it didn't affect this trip, but then its gonna be all systems go afterwards. Question is - would it be silly to start while we are away? Not currently on contraception, so that settling in time is not an issue and my cycles are regular and predictable.

But what if (and I know this is a big IF and very unlikely!) it happened - would I be crazy snowboarding when I have an embryo that isn't yet established/implanted. From avid reading of these threads I understand that the first trimester is the more delicate one, whether or not you are doing a lot of exercise.

So what are the MN opinions?
Given that I have waited 6 months for this trip - just man up and wait till trip is over and we get back? Or crack on and go for it in the second half of the trip?
My logical head says wait till we are back - but my emotional (dominant :o) part wants to start as soon as possible!

I'd say start ttc ing half way through the trip. It almost certainly wouldn't be a problem even if you conceived the day you arrived as embryos are so well protected but the anxiety might take the edge off the trip for you - and I'm guessing if you're boarding for 6 months you aren't exactly pootling along the blue runs!

Very jealous (16 week old twins, desperately trying to avoid the snow forecasts this year!)

AlpinePony · 10/01/2012 11:25

Of course it's a good idea. It will not negatively affect your chances of conception at all, if anything, an abundance of exercise, healthy living and relaxation will aid, not abet.

Implantation will, or will not occur whether you are grabbing a 540 on a pristine pipe, or sat on the sofa watching loose women and eating digestives.

Chubfuddler · 10/01/2012 11:28

Another voice for go for it. A viable early pg is not going to be affected by exercise. If anything it will help to be keeping fit and active.

PieMistress · 10/01/2012 12:53

ditto what alpine has said!!

KatAndKit · 10/01/2012 13:03

Another vote for alpine - don't give up your life while ttc as if it takes ages you will end up feeling more miserable. Miscarriages are most commonly caused by chromosomal defects, not winter sports. It would take a heck of a lot of injury (such as major car crash or worse) to dislodge a healthy viable pregnancy.

The first trimester is more "delicate" because that is when most miscarriages happen. But I had two of them and I did feck all sport. It's just that the embryos with the defects don't generally make it past the first trimester. That doesn't mean that what you do or don't do during that time (except the smoking, excess boozing and class A drugs type activity) will make any difference to the outcome.

Depends on how good you are Grin

Only thing is with boarding is that when you fall, you can fall very hard, whereas skiing falls are (generally) less of a massive stack. I'm going skiing soon and I can't bloody wait - we will certainly be SWI whilst there. Even if I had got pregnant this cycle just coming to a close, I would have gone and charged. Sadly I'm not though :( as the fecking stick just told me. Now I just need to be determined and leave the CBFM behind.

Have a great time. Where are you going?

AriesWithBellsOn · 10/01/2012 13:32

"Healthy living" *Alps? Healthy living? In a ski resort? With all that vin chaud and schnapps around?

AlpinePony · 10/01/2012 13:45

Aries I'm a purist, I go to ski, not get pissed! Wink

AriesWithBellsOn · 10/01/2012 13:46

You purist you. Eat poudre.

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/01/2012 13:49

Thanks all and pleasantly surprised at the opinions - I guess I was prepared for the opposite!

Agree that my usual 1 weeker is not quite healthy living - lots of cheese/potato/bacon type food plus copious quantities of vin chaud, beer and local spirits but I'm hoping that the fact we are out for so long (and we have a budget to stick to!) will mean that the consumption is more balanced out over the whole trip... I've always said that a snow trip is a neutral effect on the body - fabulous physical activity to compensate for the food and drink :-)

Aries - you're right about the bumps on boarding (I used to ski!) being more of an impact. I no longer tumble too much but as I want to push myself onto steeper slopes I know there will be falls (and probably knowing me - tears!) Kind of hoping that the reputation of Banff/Rockies for powder snow is true, and because we're out for a longer period we can pick and choose the days where conditions are best for going off piste, and be a bit gentler on piste if the conditions are iffy...

Sounds Fab.U.Lus! EnvyEnvyEnvy

AlpinePony · 10/01/2012 15:24

Banff/lake Louise/sunshine are fab, I've spent months out there. Make sure you get to kicking horse and fernie/red too if you can. I hope you get some good snow. There's tons of opportunities for "in bounds" skiing away from the numpties, in particular anything off the summit platter at Louise and goat's eye mountain at sunshine.

The only way to dislodge your first trimester pregnancy will be to fall on to a spike which pierces your uterus.

I am greeeeeeeeeen with envy. Where are you staying?

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/01/2012 15:51

Thanks AlpinePony - I've heard very good things and can't wait. Realise its going to be very different to europe and ski-in/ski-out with the bus trips to the hill, but that sounds like its more than compensated for by the potential for accessible off piste powder. We'd kind of pencilled in a trip to the other places if logistics/finances allow...

We're in a b&b (Big Horn) for the first week in Banff.
Then have 3 weeks staff accomodation at Banff Park Lodge - so I think it will be some annexe nearby but hopefully we can still use their rather lovely facilities. After that... who knows! Hoping we meet some locals that can point us in the direction of something very cheap for the last 4 weeks or we can extend our stay at the Lodge for a reasonable rate.

Is it sad that I have been thinking that if we are incredibly lucky to concieve quickly - a boy should have Albert for a middle name (Alberta!) and a girl should have Louise (Lake Louise!)

I once spent a month in the youth hostel in LL for $1600 incl. Lift ticket! Check out their winter specials, hihostels.ca or something - it's not all dorms, they've got rooms with double beds for couples too. Very fucking plush for a hostel!

I've also stayed at the samesun hostel in Banff which was a bit more rough and ready (party crowd), but also a great deal. You're very unlikely to get an apartment share unfortunately, so if you want cheap it'll be hostels or if you're working staff accommodation obv., although that might not be condusive to TTC! ;)

CareBear1 · 15/01/2012 12:53

Hi Stuckinthefens, couldn't resist adding my view here. I've done 2 winter seasons (one skiing, one boarding) some years ago which were literally the best time of my life. I've been ttc for the last 4 years (unluckily, and unrelated) and just got back yesterday from skiing hol where we were SWI like mad. I spent most of the week 'taking it easy' just in case, though couldn't resist a few off piste runs. I just wanted to say that whilst i'm sure its safe, i would say if this is to be the only 2 months you get to devote to boarding then do it - go for every run, chute, jump, double black diamond and crazy route you can without holding back. My winters were such a special time in my life, as I'm sure these 2 months will be for you. There's plenty of time for ttc after. Also one more thought - an egg takes what about 3 months to fully ripen and mature, plus you'll have all that canadian air in your lungs and blood stream for a good while after you get back, therefore i reckon you can still use those names whenever you conceive.

have a fab time whatever you decide. x

nenehooo · 15/01/2012 18:18

First of all, I'm VERY jealous... your trip sounds incredible!!! If I had the opportunity I would so do it - when else will you get the chance? We went on our potentially last snowboarding trip at Christmas (only a week Sad) and it was amazing.
It did seem to mess up my cycle though - My usual 24-26 days turned into 31. However I was drinking tonnes rather more alcohol than usual as well as trying to fight off a cold and taking lots of drugs and not sleeping very well. And actually in the grand scheme of things, what's a few extra days in your cycle?
I say go and get SWI!!! x

nenehooo · 15/01/2012 18:21

Just read that back... I mean I was taking lots of drugs to try to fight off the cold not hard drugs! Blush
Paracetamol and ibuprofen only, honest!!!
