SA results - any advice?

So hubby had an SA done on the 31st.
The doctor phoned today and said that he need to do it again.
What they didn't say was why.

If it was bad, would they have told us? Does this mean that they got it wrong, or the results were inconclusive?

It sounds like they didn't test it in time or contaminated it or somethng. If it was poor quality they would have given you the results (I would have thought). There are lots of people posting here and elsewhere about low results and quoting actual numbers.

Well this is what I am thinking. There were no numbers given so either they don't want to say until they're sure or it was a case of contamination etc.

Any other thoughts?
He went back to the docs today to get the pot for another sample.
I understand that as a rule they do 3 samples but I wondered if anyone else had had this and been told the results after one test only to be told to do it again.

DH had to repeat his first SA but we were given the results first.
His was repeated as he had a very low count and so it was advised to be repeated to ensure it wasn't the test that was done wrong.

I know sometimes samples can be damaged or not tested quick enough so a retest is required, maybe this is what has happened i they haven't given you any results?

Not a sniff of any results. If they had stuffed it up I wish they would just say.

When he went back to the docs, did he ask why he had to retest/if there were any results from the previous test?
Sounds odd that they wouldn't just say why he needs to retest, it would be easier and more reassuring.

Hopefully they just don't want to admit that they cocked up the test or misplaced the sample :)

'cocked up' arf arf.

No. They didn't say anything and he didn't want to ask at the front desk of the doctors.
I'm guessing that if it was bad they would have told us. However maybe they didn't want to say anything so not to worry us.

I guess time will tell.

The original sample could have been contaminated in some way, or it might not have been analysed within the right timeframe. Did your DH do the sample on site as it were, or did he have to transport it? Because sometimes there is too much time between producing the sample and it being analysed meaning that the sperm have perished, they're not really able to cope with life in the outside world Wink

The other possibility is that the sample showed low count or some other abnormality but I would have thought that the Dr would have explained this first. They do always insist on a second sample being produced before they will offer any conclusions on it because sometimes there are one off bad results (for example if the man had an infection or had been ill, or had been sat in a hot tub etc). But it is usual to wait at least a month before doing the second sample to allow for any temporary effects so I wouldn't have thought that the Dr would have asked for another one to be done straight away if this was the case.

Can you ask the Dr tomorrow?
