'21 day' Results advice?

Argh! Ok, I should be happy, I just spoke to the dr's receptionist and my 21 day and 'tfts' results are 'normal'.

But - the blood tests were done on day 22 of my cycle - 5 days past ovulation and I got my period on day 28 (so 11 day luteal phase). So what would 'normal' be and if they're assuming I was 7 days past ov then would they expect something different if they knew I was actually only 5 days? Also, if everything is normal then why the short luteal phase (11 days is the longest it ever is, now I'm taking high dose vitamin b, it was 9 days before).

Confused

I can't get any actual results until tomorrow morning when I can speak to a dr on the phone, so I'll just be tormenting myself til then!

Most drs say a "day 21" result of 30+ confirms ovulation, so this is what you are looking for. NB. Some drs say they are happy with 25 and others want to see 40, so this doesn't seem to be set in stone. As yours was 2 days early (it should ideally be at 7dpo) if it is borderline, you might want to see if you can get it repeated.

leeloo1 · 05/01/2012 15:26

Thanks eurochick, thats helpful. Hopefully the dr will be able to give me the actual numbers tomorrow.

Do you have any idea if the numbers would get higher or lower after the extra 2 days?

(sorry if this makes no sense - I'm confusing myself here!)

I was so expecting there to be a problem that I'm really thrown they've said there isn't... and if there isn't then why aren't I pregnant? [stamping foot in toddler-esque fashion here!]

I would say your result would be lower at 5dpo than it probably would have been at 7dpo. My understanding is that the test is designed to pick up the peak level of progesterone and for most women that will be at 7dpo.

Ok, so I couldn't speak to a dr, but spoke to a receptionist - who today did give me my results!

Apparently my Prolactin is 100 mmu (I think, I also think she said this could be between 40 and 500 or something, but perhaps I misheard.

My Progesterone was 39.4. So thats good right?! But perhaps its not staying high for long enough. Confused

Those results sound fine to me.

leeloo1 · 06/01/2012 13:29

Thank you. I should stop stressing now. I think I just wanted there to be a 'reason' why ttc wasn't happening and thought this'd be it - at least this is one thing thats been eliminated then. :)

I know that feeling! Have you had any other tests? (u/s, day 3 bloods, HSG, etc) And has your partner had an SA?

leeloo1 · 06/01/2012 15:29

Lol, I guess its better to have a 'problem' in a way as at least then you know what needs fixing! Grin

I had a few swabs done, which were fine and have a scan in a week. Although the letter said to drink 2 pints of water beforehand, so looking online that suggests its an ultrasound, whereas the dr said it'd be internal?! I guess I'll wait and see what happens when I get there.

The dr didn't want to do the 3 day test as she said the scan would give the same information. DH is going for his SA this week too! Eeek, lots of test results to stress over!

Have you had many of these tests? (don't want to be nosy, but you sound like you know what you're talking about. :))

I don't mind sharing!

I have had the following tests:
With GP: day 3 and 21 bloods for me, SA for husband; all results normal, referred to fertility clinic

At fertility clinic: internal ultrasound, rubella immunity test, HSG, second SA for husband; all results normal, referred for IVF

With private gynae: immunology testing; high natural killer cells detected so trying Letrozole (to boost ovulation) and steroids (to suppress the NK cells) whilst waiting for IVF.

leeloo1 · 14/01/2012 11:44

Sorry for the (very rude) slow reply. I've been avoiding the conception topic until my scan - which I had this morning - as burying my head in the sand/ignoring it all clearly means there was no problem! Confused Blush

Thanks for sharing the details of your tests. Why did you decide to go private? It sounds like the right choice if the immunology testing found something treatable, before sending you down the IVF route. I'm guessing its something thats not offered on the NHS? Fingers crossed it works for you anyway.

No problem!

I am still on the waiting list for NHS IVF. I only went private for the immunology testing. I had suspected that might be a problem after reading about it and wanted to get tested before IVF - if my body is rejecting embryos it is going to do that whether they are created inside me or in a lab.

As far as I know you can only get immunology testing on the NHS for repeated miscarriages and then you have to push for it, etc.

leeloo1 · 15/01/2012 18:47

Ah ok, thats interesting. It must be frustrating that you almost had to self-diagnose - and go private to get your suspicions confirmed. Its good that there's the option to 'just' have that done privately though - I guess if you're paying then you get the choice/service you want.

Hi ladies,
Eurochick I hope you don't mind me asking but how much did it cost to go private for the NK cells test? I have a DS who is 3.8 but over the last 2.8 years of TTC DC2 I have had 2 miscarriages, an ectopic (left tube removed) and most recently a chemical pregnancy. Have had a whole load of RMC tests on NHS (get results on 3rd Feb) but if they don't show anything I want to be tested for NK cells. A lady on another thread said she recalled it being around £500 for test and consultation with Dr Shetata in London but she couldn't remember exactly. Does that sound right to you? And what sort of costs do you incur for ongoing treatment? Just trying to get an idea of how much saving I need to do! I really hope the steroids etc does the trick for you - fingers crossed!

Sorry OP for hijacking your thread. Your results do sound good so I hope a BFP is just around the corner for you!

leeloo1 · 16/01/2012 20:12

No worries Greenolives. Sorry to hear about mcs etc. :(

OP posts:
eurochick · 16/01/2012 21:10

I paid 1100ish for initial consultation, nk cell tests and blood clotting tests so 500 for the nk cell tests sounds about right.

Each consultation thereafter is about £150-200 ish from memory, plus you pay for drugs, etc.

Have a look at the Prednisolone thread. There are a dozen or so women on there going through immunolgy testing and treatment.

GreenOlives · 17/01/2012 08:43

Thanks for the info Euro, I'll take a look at the pred thread. I'm definitely going to wait and chat to my consultant before I make any decisions as I'm clinging onto the hope that he may be able to refer me on the NHS. Thanks again.
