i know they probably dont actually work and that general good healthy lifestyle and diet is just as good but which vitamins could i take to a) improve my health and b) make me feel that i am doing everything possible in order to get pregnant?? am already cutting out booze, eating more fresh fruit and veg and exercising regularly, oh and having sex!

If you are eating all the fresh fruit and veg then you should be getting more vitamins that way. There's no harm in taking pregnancy/preconception vitamins and they may make you feel better. They haven't invented one that will actually get you pregnant yet though!!

Before TTC, I had been on a weightloss regime of healthy eating, very little booze and lots of exercise. I fell pregnant on holiday when I was eating all sorts of crap and boozing every day. Sods law in action I reckon. The only supplements I took was folic acid sporadically

If you can get your DH to down some zinc and vitamin C each day (fairly cheap from most supermarkets etc) then I believe that help to produce healthy sperm! DH has just thrown away half a bottle from when we were trying for DD - obviously I have no idea if it helped his swimmers, but it certainly didn't do any harm and my 7mo beautiful DD is now sleeping peacefully beside me!

You can get his 'n' hers conception vits from Boots and I can also recommend B6

Just to add, any vitamins you give to your partner will take a good few months to have any effect on the quality of his sperm. I believe it takes 70 days to manufacture sperm from scratch.

I take the Pregnacare Preconception vitamins. Not cheap, but Boits or Tesco usually have them on 3 for the price of 2.

Hi, I tried zia west vitafem whilst I was trying to conceive as I was using a sperm donor so needed a bit of help, ha! Thety are supposed to help get the body ready aswell as increase fertility (I bought mine from Pride Angel I have ut link on so you can have a look www.prideangel.com/p14/shop.aspx I believe they do male version also) I took them for 2 months before I became pregnant and as they included folic acid didnt need to take that aswell. Hope this helps, good luck xx

Me again, wanted to add that when I was trying to get pregnant I felt a little useless so taking vitamins and doing things to try and help made me feel better phscologically if that makes sense? I agree with KatandKit tht they arent going to make you pregnant but if it makes you feel better then thats a good thing!

I read the Maca root, taken for stress, anxiety, and concentration, has fertility boosting effects on both men and women. It's some south American root and I've been taking it for a while because my job is very stressful and I was suffering badly from tension headaches. The fertility side of things is an unmarketed side effect. But who knows.

I read a great blog - Eating for Fertility. I'm a big believer in your diet affecting everything, and found it really interesting. I don't eat anything processed at all including wheat - it's a paleo approach to food, which is basically anything you'd find in nature. I eat a ton of eggs, fish, meat and vegetables. Not quite as hardcore as raw foods/vegan, but definitely avoiding anything that puts nasty chemicals in the food and avoiding refined, processed sugar like the plague!

Every morning, I have what I call a green drink ;) Apparently leafy greens are really good for just generally boosting everything but we can't consume enough in our diets. The green powder is made of algea, greens, chlorella etc and I make a smoothie of water, bananas and agave nectar to help it go down. I actually really enjoy it now!

I also read that folic acid isn't actually what we should be having, as it's a synthetic but that actually, it's folate that should be consumed. So I'm on the lookout for supplements that contain natural folate, not synthetic folic acid.

Whether these boost fertility or not, I feel like I'm just generally being really healthy, which will produce a healthy environment and eggs, and my DH is doing the same.

I am so sure B6 helped me conceive, I had low progesterone and i'm convinced it really helped boost it.

thanks for the replies, i think i will take folic acid and b6 and carry on eating healthily , except tonight i have succumbed to 2 glasses of wine to destress! (back on track tomorrow)
