My exemption cert is about to run out as dd is nearly a year. We want to start trying soon - can I get folic acid on prescription (and is it cheeky to).

I know someone who had a high dose of folic acid prescribed because of a deformity in a previous pregnancy. I'm not sure ordinary ones are available on prescription.

Healthy start vitamins are available free to those who qualify -I think HVs can help. If you don't qualify for them then tbh it's probably cheeky to ask for a prescription.

No, the health in pregnancy grant used to cover it but I think that's means tested now.

nickelbabe · 05/12/2011 16:58

no,you can't, but i've got some left-over (about 20 tabs, i think) if yo uwant me to send them to you?

You qualify for Healthy Start if you?re at least 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four years old and you or your family get:

Income Support, or
Income-based Jobseeker?s Allowance, or
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or
Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit unless your family is receiving Working Tax Credit run-on only*) and has an annual family income of £16,190 or less (2011/12).

You also qualify if you are under 18 and pregnant, even if you don?t get any of the above benefits or tax credits.

*Working Tax Credit run-on is the Working Tax Credit you receive in the 4 weeks immediately after you have stopped working for 16 hours or more per week.

Pregnant women, women with a baby under one year old and children from six months old to their fourth birthday on Healthy Start will get green Healthy Start vitamin coupons. These will be sent to you, with your Healthy Start vouchers, every eight weeks.
Healthy Start vitamin drops for children packet and Healthy Start vitmains for women bottleHealthy Start women?s vitamin tablets contain:

Folic acid: reduces the chance of your baby having spina bifida, a birth defect where the spine doesn?t form properly
Vitamin C: helps maintain healthy tissue in the body
Vitamin D: helps your body to absorb calcium and so supports your baby?s bones to develop properly.

I got it on prescription but was already pregnant and giving GP a hard time about no midwife appointments til I'm 14 weeks (don't ask, I'm still annoyed!) and therefore no opportunity to get the exemption certificate!

PinkPepper · 05/12/2011 17:14

my gp printed me out a prescription handed it me and said you need to take these, I read it and told him I'd already got some and then he ripped it up. but he did the whole prescription thing without even telling me/asking me
This was when I told him I was pregnant though

yellowflowers · 05/12/2011 17:47

Bulk buy not bull buy.

I am going to go to doc anyway so I might just ask and see what they say.

It depends. I got given them on prescription but when I saw my GP when pregnant.

justabigdisco · 05/12/2011 17:52

Yes you can get it on prescription, I'd just ring your GP and say you are trying, can you please have some folic acid. The worst they can say is 'no you need to buy it'.
