TTC and booking a holiday?

Hi everyone, I've been TTC for 4 months now, no luck yet and was wondering about booking a holiday for May next year as haven't been for years and would do me and DP good. Am worrying if I am lucky enough to get a BFP before then if it would be harmful to go on hols? I keep thinking though chances are I won't have got a BFP and then I won't have a hol booked? Does everyone put hols on hold while TTC? I suppose really should use the money to save?! What do you all think?Xmas Smile

I've been TTC for 16 months now, so no I haven't put off holidays! The financial aspect is a personal one, I can't comment on that. If you are planning an overseas holiday that involves flights, you should perhaps ensure you won't breach the airline time limits for flying when pregnant. If you were to get pregnant as of this cycle, your due date would be Aug/Sept ish, so I am sure a May holiday would be fine. I say book, and enjoy! With luck it will be your last holidays as a couple, so make the most of it :)

Ooh, spooky! I was just about to ask this very question. I asked in Chat and the general consesnsus was to put the money aside and use it to book a last minute holiday. Whilst this is good advice, I do feel like I need something else to look forward to so I can stop obsessing about TTC quite as much.

I spoke to a lovely lady at Thomson who said that if you are pregnant and have complications so cannot travel, you can cancel and get your deposit back (seemed too good to be true but thats what she said), but if it was a normal pregnancy and you just wanted to cancel because you didn't feel like travelling you would lose some of the cost although your insurance may cover it if you had a doctors note.

General medical advice seems to be that flying up to 28 weeks is safe and some insurers even cover up to 32 weeks.

We are in a similar boat, and have bitten the bullet and booked a cruise for May. On the small print it does say you can not travel if you are 23 weeks at the end of the holiday, and a note to confirm dates must be provided by GP. This means I would need to be preggers this cycle not to be able to travel, it would be just typical if that were the case.

I would say try not to put things off as you just never know and there are loads of ladies on these threads who have been TTC for year plus.

ooh just book a holiday. Just remember to book insurance now if you need to cancel you will need dr to fill in form approx £25. If you book to a place that has malaria you would be advised not to travel and so could cancel reason being malaria in pregnant ladies more dangeruns both to mum and lo. Think about injections if you need any have them before ttc. Good luck and book that holiday I went to portugal and france flew to both

Book your holiday. It is nice to have something to look forward to. Book somewhere fairly westernised, or even just somewhere in Europe. No vaccinations required so won't interfere with your ttc if you are still trying then, or will be perfectly safe if you are pregnant.

You won't be too pregnant to fly by the time May comes around so there are unlikely to be any reasons why you can't go away. Lots of pregnant women go on holiday. I went to Turkey this year and had just finally got my BFP a couple of weeks before. That early on I was quite worried about having a miscarriage in a foreign country, but other than that there was no reason not to go. It took my mind off things and we had a lovely time.

Book your holiday!

When we were struggling TTC my DH and I wrote a list of places we wanted to go ideally before we had a baby, to try and give us something to focus on! We only managed the first place on the list as I ended up getting pregnant on holiday in May this year! Apparently it's quite common as you naturally relax more when you're on holiday. Good luck Smile

Last march we'd been ttc for over a year. That holiday did us the power of good. We were so stressed, had a horrible virus in Janaury and just decided to book it. We finally had sff again, got some sun and chilled out.
You can't out your life on hold for ttc. I agree, plan it but maybe don't book it if it's somewhere more exotic. But if you're still not successful by then you'll definitely need it!

LoveInAColdClimate · 06/12/2011 07:03

Just book it! I must confess that I didn't book any skiing holidays while we were TTC, and I might have steered away from anywhere I'd have needed jabs I wouldn't have been able to have, but either you'll still be TTC in May and a break will do you good or you'll be pregnant and, er, a break will do you good. Good luck!

Well, I'd probably disagree as I just had to cancel a holiday!

I'm 24 weeks pregnant and have developed SPD so having a lot of pain and mobility issues. I booked a 4 day city break back in September when I was pregnant but feeling ok. Thought I'd actually feel better traveling at 21 weeks as the morning sickness and headaches I had started to ease off at about 15.

Well, SPD came on quite suddenly and about a week before the holiday was due I had to cancel. Was with EasyJet, so no refunds. £800 lost. I do have travel insurance and will be making a claim, but that depends on whether or not they consider SPD (which the GP has referred to as "back pain") to be a "complication" or not. And even so, I will still lose the £200 excess.

I'd put the holiday cash in a savings account and book closer to the date next year. But I suppose it depends on how long you've been trying, really. I conceived my first pregnancy after 2 months - had mc - and then conceived this current one after 6 months. If you've been trying for much longer, then yeah - probably best to just carry on as normal. But get travel insurance!

AriesWithBellsOn · 07/12/2011 10:49

Book the holiday. Sorry, but you might be TTC for months and months or even years. You can't put your life on hold. If you are lucky enough to conceive then you can cross that bridge when you come to it. HTH.

KatAndKit · 07/12/2011 10:53

Booking the holiday might even help. Not in the "relax and go on holiday" way, but in the "sod's law" way.

I managed to conceive a couple of weeks after I resigned from a job with good maternity leave and pay. So I say book a high activity sort of trip, complete with long haul flight etc etc.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 07/12/2011 18:55

calculate your due date from your lmp, count back and see how many weeks you are on your return flight date. If thats less than the maximum weeks pg from the airline you intend booking with, then go for it. Otherwise hang fire, as you can guarantee invoking sods law and getting your bfp the day after you book the holiday.
