Hi, booked to see my GP on Sat morning as it's been 18 months now and nothing. I'm two days late, but I can feel it on it's way so I'm pretty sure it hasnt happened this month.

Just wondering what information I will need to give them and what the first stage is?

Any advice would be welcome, thank you

GP may either arrange some simple investigative tests for both of you (i.e blood test for you, semen analysis for him) or actually refer you without doing any tests for an appt at a subfertility unit.

I would ask to be referred because at 18 months of ttc without luck there is likely to be a fertility problem with either one or equally both of you. I would not want any further delay now in being referred on.

You need a diagnosis first and foremost and you will need to be persistant in order to get answers.

Good luck on Saturday. If you both can go to this appt together do so and write down anything you want to ask well ahead of time (this also applies to the initial appt with the specialist as such appts can be nerve wracking). No question is daft.

Hi, I went to my GP after 8 months as I was nearly 35 & we had been timing SWI perfectly but not a hint of a BFP! All she asked was whether I had regular cycles & whether I was having sex regularly. She booked me in for a day 3 blood test to check hormone levels & told me to book later in the cycle for a day 21 blood test to measure my progesterone levels. The day 3 tests all came back fine but my progesterone level was low, indicating I had not ovulated. It turns out I went for the 'day 21 test' too early in my cycle. My GP had said the day 21 test had to be done 7 days before AF & because I had fairly short 25 day cycles & actually had the test on day 17 (due to the weekend). Since asking the lovely ladies on MN the concensus was that you should have the day 21 test 7 days after ovulation, which is not necessarily 7 days before AF!
Anyway I went for another day 21 test in my next cycle (on day 20) & the results of this were 33 - anything above 30 indicates ovulation has occurred.

My GP did say she was not too concerned about me not being pregnant after 8 months as it can take some fertile couples up to 2 years.

My GP had just referred my DH for a SA when I found out I was pregnant & will be 5 weeks on Saturday :)

FX for you & that you will get your BFP very soon

Sorry for the long post!

Thanks for your replies, and congrats Ready. It's all so confusing, I'm sure it's not supposed to be so difficult! I'm 36 now and scared that I've left it too late so am praying it something simple.

Hi Silly - I'm TTC *2, my DS is nearly 2 and am at the tender age of 40 (just). Your GP should refer you straight away for blood tests and will want to check your partner. Lay it on thick that you have tried v hard (ie sex 2-3 times per week).

My GP is not at all interested in my not conceiving after a year of trying, but I have one child. I will however be pushing hard for tests if this goes on much longer because it's v upsetting. You are well within your rights for tests so don't let anything get in your way.

GOOD LUCK.

ps - I conceived at 37 no problem. 36 is spring chicken! However, if you have a simple problem that can be fixed now is the time to do it asap. Remember, this TTC lark is quite a lottery!
