hi there my partner and i were ttc and i went for routine check and have had a cin 1 abnormal result which i know is not the end of the world but ive had gynae probs for 4 years so am a bit stressed over it. However i now cannot decide whether to continue ttc or to wait untill this is sorted as im concerned that if any treatment is needed that something could go wrong an wreck my chances all together but at same time im worried about the risk of getting pregnant and delaying any necessary treatment if this turns out to be something bad. Can anyone advise or give an opinion many thanks

Go with the treatment. No question.

It's simple and effective.

I don't really understand the terminology, have you had a colposcopy for the first abnormal result? If not, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll need treatment. Apparently it's quite common to have abnormal smears, especially if it's less than 10 years since you first had sex, well that's what my GP told me anyway.

I can't advise, but had a similar-ish situation 2 years ago. I had been having irregular but constant bleeding for over nearly 2 years and had a smear as just another test although I was only 23. It came back abnormal so had a colposcopy which showed everything seemed ok. During this time I'd stopped using hormonal contraception in order to try and get my body back to normal, and DP and I were generally being irresponsible!

Then about a month later I had a mc although I hadn't realised I was pg, and don't know how far along I was. 2 weeks after that I had a hysteroscopy which had already been arranged. After that I was told they still didn't know what was wrong but I'd probably struggle to conceive. I was supposed to go back for more tests and to start some treatment to see if they could fix my bleeding but ended up having a very surprising BFP after 3 months. I was 8 weeks pg then.

DD is now 12 months and we're kind of trying to conceive, but it's difficult with my weird bleeding and can't work out my cycle. I have a smear booked for Monday and I'm a bit worried about it. It'll be the first one since I turned 25 and so the first one that I know the result will be the result (ie before I've been told that hearing nothing means that either it's clear or they threw it away because I was too young to be on the smear programme).

Do you know when there will be a decision about any treatment required or when you have further tests? I think you need to speak to a doctor about it. I was very lucky that everything was ok and I ended up with a healthy child but the idea that I could have had treatment thinking I wouldn't conceive and could've harmed an unborn baby is a bit scary. I assume that they would advise you not to ttc while having treatment, or waiting for treatment.

Definitely get some professional advice, and good luck with it all. Smile

That was a very long post, sorry! Blush

Def wait for the treatment and get the all clear before trying, my sister had an abnormal smear earlier this year and has just had treatment, in a fairly short time she went from abnormal smear result to pre
Cancerous cells and needed the laser thingy I think to nuke them all. I don't like to think about what could have happened if she had continued ttc before treatment and had ended up pregnant, it would certainly have limited her treatment options with potentially disastrous results

I've just remembered, one of my best friends was conceived while her mum had cervical cancer. IIRC she had the results first, then did a pg test and it was positive so had to decide what to do. She waited and had the baby (obviously or I wouldn't know her!) and had treatment afterwards. She's fine now and that was 25 years ago!

hi there ive now had my second test which is a grade worse than the last . nowshowing mild dyskryosis and effects of HPV, my docs are still refusing to look into it further and are keeping me on the 6 month screening programme, she has always said i continue ttc but i still have concerns that this problem will increase by another grade during pregnancy, she has said they can keep this up for 3 years or poss longer before they give any treatment, am fed up has anyone else had this problem?, ive put another post up this morning but ive had no response to it x

Hi, I had an abnormal smear last summer.

I went for a colposcopy and got to look at my cervix, which was fascinating.
There were some cells they were not happy with and the consultant came and had a look. He said that he wanted a pipelle biopsy and an ultrasound.
The pipelle biopsy was done there and then. Effectively what they do is take a sample of of the lining of your uterus. It was uncomfortable, like a bad period pain, but stopped hurting as soon as they had finished.
I had the appointment for the ultrasound the week after. The sonographer was lovely although she did worry me when she asked if I had both of my ovaries. She showed me where everything was and told me that it all looked healthy. she even confirmed that I didn't have PCOS, which had been worrying me.

I'm happy to talk about all this via a personal message is you want.

My advice would be to carry of TTCing after your appointment for the colposcopy. If you did manage to conceive before the appointment and then they did a pipelle biopsy then I don't know what would happen.

Difficult one I thought 2 mild dyskaryosis got referred. You cannot have smears during pregnancy (pregnancy makes them inaccurate) nor for ideally 3 months after. You could try but go for smears if not preg or have the next one and if the same request referral due to your wish to conceive

Approx 11 years ago, I fell pregnant and then received an abnormal result from a smear done before we conceived. IIRC, I had 2 colposcopies (sp?) whilst pregnant and was told that if it looked urgent enough they would deliver the baby early in order to treat my cervix. It wasn't, and I had a cone biopsy a few months after delivery. I honestly don't think they would be telling you to go ahead if it wasn't OK.

Bugsylugs - on my reply to her other thread I've explained the management side of screening. You can have smears even when pregnant (depending on individual circs) and women do get followed for abnormal results during pregnancy.

Smears can be read during pregnancy - the hormonal changes can make them more difficult to read but as long as the clinical info re pregnancy is on the request then it helps the screener to get the background picture.
