New Fertell fertility diagnostic kit - what do you think?

I've just picked up a free Boots magazine, and it's advertising this .

It's a new 2-part fertility diagnostic kit which separately tests male and female fertility 'in the comfort of you own home'.

I'm only interested in the female test....do you think testing FSH levels on cd3 (which is what it does) can accurately predict egg reserve (which is what it claims to do)???

At £79.99 for the kit, it'd need to be good for me to buy one, so I'd be interested in your opinions please.

If that is all it does wouldn't you be better off getting a private blood test done (£40-£50 at local hospital). Presumably then you would get more information about your levels (rather than just a high/low reading.

The test is probably fairly good for male factor, but fsh level is only one aspect of female fertility. Not worth £80 imo.

Here are the same sort of tests, but cheaper.

ladymuck · 18/12/2005 16:47

Or this site has them for £10.99 if you want a UK site.

Thank-you!

Blimey, £10.99 is a bit cheaper, and it looks like it does the same thing!

Hi

Would not advise you to spend this sort of money on such a kit. There is a huge market for such kits generally and they are not totally reliable. Also such kits could promote great anxiety amongst some people who were to use them. FSH is only part of the story and ideally both LH and FSH should be measured and compared against one another (this is usually done via a blood test).

Would instead suggest that blood tests are taken instead as this would give a more accurate picture of your hormone levels.

Thanks for the advice MU.

I had a cd21 blood test about 6 months ago, and all my GP said was that my progesterone wasn't quite as high as it should have been, but there was nothing to worry about (although being 40, of course I'm worried!) I've no idea what this means or of any implications?

If you are actively trying to conceive, and haven't managed it within the last 6 months then you should have been referred by now.

If you can afford to I would suggest looking at private options too. Whilst egg reserve is importnat it is only one of the factors that impact female fertility, and with the greatest respect to your GP he is a generalist rather than a specialist.

bella. I had the same thing. low proegesterone on day 21. the fsh and lh levels were ok. My gp said it meant I may not be ovulating and I have been refered to a hospital fertility unit. I am 39 and been ttc for 7 months.

Does the cd21 test also test LH and FSH, or is it just progesterone?

CD21 test normally measures prgesterone levels only.

Day 3 and 10 are standard tests and these measure LH and FSH levels. It is imperative that both levels are compared against one another as if looked at separately the potential to miss an underlying hormonal imbalance is there.

Not all clinics do a day 10 but I think you should be referred anyway to a gynae for further evaluation. Both of you should be tested further.

You need a diagnosis first and foremost.

The general consensus is that if you're over 35 and have been trying for six months without success then a referral should be made.
