Continuing a previous thread that went cold in May... for those trying to figure out why, when and if to start TTC. All welcome - especially those of you that perpetually lurk on MN (you know who you are.... I am usually one of them) thinking that reading the forum posts will provide the magic answer about when is the "right time".

Definitions courtesy of Dr Honeypetal Sparklepants and confuseddoiordonti:

Dither: vb. def. The act of procrastination and delaying of coming to a decision regarding reproduction due to an attachment to lie-ins, working bowels and cheap holidays in term time.

Ditherer: n. def. One who is in a permanent state of flux regarding whether to procreate or not (see def. of babyometer). On the flick of a coin, may ultimately not reproduce, or bear triplets. Whatever. pl. A confusion of ditherers.

Babyometer: def. Semi-quantitative scale upon which an individuals current extent of dithering (i.e. desire to conceive) is measured, commonly red, amber or green, although reddy-amber, greeny-amber and reddy-ambery-green have been described (see def. Dithering). Caution is required during interpretation as measurement may change hourly.

Lolz at furbabies - too cute :)

As I'm in the TTC already camp I'm taking folic acid (well in a preconception vitamin - the Boots one as always on special offer and it's vegetarian).

Didn't really think about pre-TTC health check but sounds like a good idea. If we're unsuccessful again this month (second cycle) I might go and do one of those. Things I have been doing is making sure I'm getting enough exercise, taking my vits, eating well (well trying...) not drinking too much (cruelly I've never pined for red wine so much!) and also cutting down on caffeine. Bo-ring. But feeling great at the moment, coming of the pill has been a revelation.

argh exercise... should probably do some of that! Am a size 10 and one of those lucky people whose weight doesn't really change much whatever I eat (it'll probably hit me when I'm 40...), but I'm soooo unfit!! Also soooo lazy so all I manage atm is a swim once a week. pffft. Dread to think what havoc pregnancy will wreak on my weak pathetic body...

PopcornMouse · 23/09/2011 14:55

You should take folic acid, even if you're dithering imho, as I've read you should ideally be taking them at least 3 months before falling pg?

moggle · 23/09/2011 15:08

I've heard that too, although when I searched online no "official" websites said the 3m thing, just that you should start taking it once you start trying. It isn't stored in the body so I'm not sure if there's an advantage to taking it when you're still using contraception unless you just want to be uber careful!

Further decisions made!! We have PROGRESS, ladies! After thinking about it, DH has agreed that we will start TTC next year (maybe March, but definitely April). I'm going off the pill now to re-acquaint myself with my cycle, and get health checks/blood testing done (can you say pre-TTC micromanagement, haha).

So now I think I can move myself over into the "Waiting to TTC" thread... for some people this may seem like long and a painful wait, but for me this is HUGE and very exciting! A firm decision has been made by both of us, and that means the plan is rolling! :D Barring Armageddon-type disaster, the plan is for a early 2013 baby :)

Very happy and excited!

Ooh exciting Zara!! Well done you!
We are firming up December as our starting ttc month. Mainly because we have Olympic tickets, damned if I'm going to miss that due to being glued to the sofa with a baby!! Also have a big family holiday in aug with my many uncles, aunts, cousins, etc, many of whom I don't see any other time (apart from on FB!). It's so much fun & has been 6 years since the previous one, and probably at least that long until the next one, so I don't want to risk having to miss it with a tiny not-in-any-semblance-of-a-routine baby.

I've started taking regular multivits (not forking out on conception ones yet!) and am taking evening primrose oil to try and get my cycle back to normal ASAP. I can't even remember what my periods were like before being on the pill, it's so long ago...
