How reliable are those First Response Early Pregnancy Tests?

So dh and I had a little incident with a condom this month. It slipped off slightly but not the whole way. When we took it out, we thought it still had the whole lot in it....

I'm 6 days before my period. Woke up with a migraine. Only happens in 2 situations - a period or pregnancy.

I took an early response test this morning and it is positive ffs.

But I want to know how accurate they are as it suggests that 6 days prior to period is still v early to test.

This is a nightmare for me. We are both OLD and both work full time and finished the family more than a decade ago. It was a genuine small accident that we didn't even think was an issue as thought it was ok.

They are pretty accurate as they pick up small amounts of pregnancy hormone. Get a different test and see what it says although false positives are very rare as they colour only appears if the hormone is present.

They are pretty accurate. have done them with both of my pregnancies at 5 days early and they were both correct. Try doing a clear blue as well, which I know you are ment to do on the first day of your missed period, but if that shows positive too then the likely hood is your preggers. Good luck

Catsycat · 12/07/2011 11:45

Hi Argh. My understanding was that it is more likely you would get a false negative than a false positive, just because the hcg might not be high enough to test in the early days.

Sorry this has not come at a good time for you - must be a big shock.

Argh123 · 12/07/2011 11:57

omg I just can't believe it

do you think I can only make an appointment on Monday when my period is due or will they see me sooner?

it's a huge shock. I actually cannot believe it at all. I am absolutely astounded. I have told dh. I was even having tests for the menopause ffs! I just can't believe it.

I actually feel slightly guilty too as have friends desperately trying to conceive :( and we had what we didn't even think was an accident and it seems to have happened. I just can't believe it.

They should see you any time after a positive test - although ours don't they just give you the MW number to book a booking appointment.

Argh123 · 12/07/2011 19:24

Thanks everyone Sad. Just to let you know, I have been told if I am sure I don't want it, that nothing can be done till at least 6 weeks (when they can see the sac) so I'm going to have to wait till then (will go for an assessment first).

I am really kicking myself.

Thanks for the replies.

Really sorry you have found yourself in this situation. I decided to have a termination without going though my G.P because I knew this would be her reply. I decided to do things privately and I was able to do something sooner. I was 5 weeks when I had the termination. The waiting time was 4 days after booking.
I just thought I would let you know as the waiting can be really hard so the shorter time the better maybe?

I wish you all the best it's a tough time.

Argh123 · 14/07/2011 14:26

Thanks mandoo, I really appreciate you posting.

I bought a different test type today (clear blue) - I am 4 days pre period and even that was positive too! So it really is an argh! I can't pretend it isn't happening now....

Mandoo, what happened with your appointment? I have booked an appointment for next Tuesday. My period is due on Monday. But I will only be 4 weeks.

I wouldn't be so worried if it wasn't for 2 things - 1, I have a really important overseas business trip the week after my appointment (week of the 25th) in a developing country where medical care is not so good and 2, I have a holiday booked the week after. I only get 4 weeks holiday a year and it's so important that I get time with the dcs and dh then as it's the only proper time we get to spend with each other.

When I spoke to them about the appointment, they said that they could only do anything probably in weeks 5-6 (week 5 is the business trip, week 6 is the holiday) so chances are I'd then have to wait till I was back :(. But I get really severe morning sickness :( and that will start next week. (One of the other reasons we don't want any more is that both dcs needed v specialist medical care when they were born and chances are, this one would be the same. I know I couldn't go through that again).

So I don't know what is going to happen now. All I can do is wait for this appointment on Tuesday and just hope they can treat me before I have to go away.

Mandoo, if you don't mind me asking - did you take the abortion pill or have a surgical abortion?

(I also wanted to say huge apologies to those trying to conceive who might read this - I couldn't see another topic for it and wanted to ask specifically about the pregnancy tests so I am sorry if I have offended anyone).

mandoo · 14/07/2011 17:13

Hi Argh, I had a surgical abortion at 5 weeks. I was in and out within about 8 hours. I had very little bleeding and some period pain up to a week after. I went on hoilday 2 weeks later and was fine. They suggested I refrain from swimming for 1 week after. Other than that no other problems at all. I think if you decided to take the pill the after effects are quite different. That is why I chose the other option as I couldn't face dealing with watching myself miscarry.(selfish I know)

I am currently 15weeks pregnant myself and also suffer from terrible morning sickness which I am in the grip of now so totally understand the reluctance to go though another pregnancy. I have decided to be sterilised after this baby as I really could never face a 3rd pregnancy.

I hope this helps.

Argh123 · 14/07/2011 18:04

Thanks mandoo.

I don't know if I said it below but dh has now said he will have a vasectomy. He definitely doesn't want any more children and I think this incident has been enough to convince him to take this route (beforehand he thought we could manage but obviously not!).

I also don't like the sound of the pill but may have to opt for that if that is all they can offer at this early stage.

Good luck. Feel free to ask for any other advice, I really don't mind. What ever your decision I wish you all the best.

Argh123 · 14/07/2011 20:34

Thanks mandoo. I'll let you know what happens on Tuesday.
