Low Sperm Count

We have just discovered that Dh has a low sperm count (14.5 million). Does anyone know if it is probable/possible to get pregnant naturally with this low a sperm count, or should be just start ivf straight away? I am fairly convinced we should commence ivf now. but would really like to hear from anyone who has got pg with low sperm count, but without ivf???
Thanks

has the doctor spoken to you about it? Has he offered ways of increasing sperm count? there are ways but you need to discuss the details first before rushing into IVF

My DP's is low. We have conceived two lovely babies in less than 5 months each time with no problems at all. Try it for a while first!

Morningpaper, do yu mind me asking how low your DH's is?
I am sort of giving up hope here, because last month I had surgery for endometriosis, and now we have discovered this! Have been ttc for 2 years and am very very fed up.

Madigan: I was trying to root this info out and I can't find it! I seem to have a figure of 22 in my head but I don't know if that's right. I think there were other problems too (low motility) but it was a long time ago.

Good luck

Just over 7 years ago I was told I had a hormone inbalance and DH had a low count (can't remember how many) and those he did have had poor mobility. I was put on clomid to encourage ovulation but we were told it was very unlikely that we would have children naturally together. We were pput on the waiting list for IVF.
However, after a weeks holiday, which meant DH wasn't riding his bike to work every morning, I conceived our first baby, just 6 weeks after being told we couldn't have kids.

I am convinced that DH riding his bike caused a tempory drop in his count, as we have gone on to conceive 3 more times (although 1 ended in MC).

The consultant we saw didn't agree to re-refer DH to a urologist. I think if he had, we would have found that there was an underlying cause of his low count.

Anyway, my point is, don't assume that your DH count is permenantly low. Is he doing anything to perhaps effect it? Has he been refered to a specialist? He could have a varicocele (which my DH now has) or a hydrocele, both of which are repairable.

I wish you lots of luck in getting this sorted out xxxxx

Thanks Coathanger
No - DH has not yet seen a specialist, I am going to see if I can get him referred to one. Your story has certainly given me some hope though, so thank you.

my cousins dh's sperm was low due to environmental factors from being in Saudi and IRaq handling chemicals etc (ex Army bod)
He was given some dietary changes, but they failed
they did 3 cycles of IVF were broke, they then applied to adpot and lo and behold she get pregnant, when they have had his sperm checked recently as they want another baby, his sperm count is only about 20% lower than a normal healthy count!
So maybe ask about some diet changes etc as well as trying other routes?

Hi Eppifany, and thank you for your advice

still BDing .... still no BFP .... still totally fed up. it is now 2 years that we have been ttc. feeling down about it today. Looks like its going to have to be IVF for us, which I am totally dreading.
