Anyone out there who actually listened in GCSE biology - what are the signs of ovulation please?! Smile

TTC at the moment and have just realised how much I don't know about my own body!

Thank you!

Hello Glacier,

You can buy ovulation tests now in pharmacies which work in much the same was as pregnancy tests as are relatively accurate. Might be worth a shot? I think you can also work out best time for conception, based on the date of your last period and average length of your cycle. Hmm, I think you may experience a slightly higher body temp.

Google it perhaps?

Good luck trying, x

Thanks Jo - have been on the pill for 15 years so no idea what my normal cycle is.

I've got the Persona one, it's really good. Used it once to not get pregnant and once to do so. Worked first try...

jo102jo · 21/04/2011 16:07

Ditto, i too was on the pill 10 years +. Body takes such a long time to regulate itself afterwards it is hard to know when the next one is going to come. When did you come off the pill?

Glacier · 21/04/2011 16:08

Thanks Cherry, have just googled it. Will give it a go!

Jo, 13 days ago! So should have started new pack on Saturday but didn't. I know my periods were really irregular before so no idea what will happen. But like the idea of a handy kit!

If you lurk around these boards, you will soon become familiar with the idea of EWCM - egg white-like cervical mucus that is produced around ovulation time.

Some women get some level of ovulation pain. I tend to feel bloated and get a pain very low down on the right side of my abdomen.

The ovulation predictor kits mentioned should give you 12-48 hours' notice of ovulation.

If you want to track your cycle closely, try temping on fertilityfriend. You should see a temperature rise just after ovulation has occured.

I would say though, if you are not under pressure because of your age, just sh@g lots from when your period ends until it starts again and that should do the trick!

bamboobutton · 21/04/2011 16:10

monitoring your cervical mucus is the best bet.

when it is like raw egg white and can be stretched like this it means you are at peak time for conception.

cherryburton · 21/04/2011 16:10

I got mine off ebay - was a fair bit cheaper... Smile

jo102jo · 21/04/2011 16:15

I think if you have only just come off the pill (13 days ago) you might have to wait a little while until you ovulate properly for the first time again as your body needs to kick back into action and remember what it needs to do! It has been fooling itself for the past 15 years that it has been releasing eggs when in fact it hasnt released a single one.

I agree with eurochick relax and don't stress too much about it or put pressure on yourself. P.s. interesting fact about mucus, i never realised!!

ElmMum · 22/04/2011 19:29

Just to jump on your thread, I had EWCM like that yesterday but the CBFM said yesterday was the first high day. Today I don't have EWCM and according to CBFM it's still a high day. Thinking now that if I trusted my body rather than CBFM then I might have already Ovd?

eurochick · 22/04/2011 19:32

It can come and go depending on how hydrated you are among other things. I noticed it when I first got up this morning but not later on, probably because I am a bit dehydrated in this weather!

ElmMum · 22/04/2011 20:24

eurochick interesting... (adds drinking lots of water to list of things to do while TTC)

eurochick · 22/04/2011 20:31

It was something my acupuncturist mentioned to me. I have been having an unusually dry month (can't quite believe I am talking about this to strangers on the internet!) and she suggested it could have been caused by a bit of dehydration or a 24 hr bug I had in the first half of the cycle that caused a temperature spike (i.e. a minor and short term fever).

If you're interested in learning more, it might be worth buying a copy of Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. I have gcse, a-level biology and a post grad qualification in nursing and I was never taught about what signs indicate ovulation. What I know I learnt from here, that book and fertility friend!
Try not to get Hung up on checking initially. Good luck!

pommedechocolat · 25/04/2011 11:29

I get tummy cramps and a huge massive spot around the chin area. Feel all fat too.
What I don't know is when they appear iyswim.
Will they happen as ovulation is happening or just before? The egg is only 'fertilisable' for 12-24 hours isn't it? So if shagging happens when these signs appear is it already too late? Does anyone know?
Am I overthinking this somewhat?! With dd just had sex an extra time a week and fell pregnant second month. This time round I seem to be much more obsessed with the whole thing.
