Hi All,

First off ? apologies as I think this I going to turn into an essay.

Hubby and I have decided to try for a baby - exciting!

I've booked a doctors appointment as I'm pretty sure I don't ovulate. Let me explain my theory behind this - as a teenager I would go months without a period and then get a really, really heavy period. I therefore started taking the contraceptive pill (microgynon) to control the bleeding. Was on this for about 5 years and was then put on the mini pill because of my weight. Was on the mini pill (with sporadic periods) for about another 5 years. I stopped taking contraceptives 6 months ago and since then I?ve not had a period. So either way something is not quite right down there.

So have booked an appointment to speak to the doctor about this. What should I expect from the doctor? I?d read a few different things ? they will not look at fertility until you?ve been trying for one year (but as this has been ongoing since I was a teenager do I need to wait another year?), you can have a simple blood test to see if you?re ovulating and if you?re not ovulating you can be prescribed clomid (what is this exactly? I presume a tablet which kick starts ovulation?).

Also I am obese (size 22/24). I am working on this although am I likely to come across the doctors not wanting to do anything until I lose all the weight (which will take years to lose at a healthy rate). Also I do fully appreciate that my weight is likely to be having an effect on my periods etc but I have always had the same problem and have not always been this size.

Any advice grateful appreciated.

The approach the doc will take in your case will very much depend on the doc! Some will probably want you to try for a while anyway, some will start investigations straight away.

Most will suggest you get your BMI down to under 30 if it's below that (see the weight-related thread below for more on this).

Your symptoms are suggestive of PCOS (which I have, along with a few other posters here). If that is the diagnosis, have a look at the verity website, which is dedicated to PCOS issues.

The first thing your doctor will probably do is ask for some blood tests from you and a sperm analysis for your husband.

g'luck!
