Dermoid cyst removal and fertility

Hi ive been diagnosed with a 7cm dermoid cyst on my ovary and I am going to see a specialist to arrange surgery to remove it. Has anybody else experiences anything similar? I have begun to experience pain and i have been told to stop TTC. Does anybody know how long ill have to wait for the opp or how long after the op i will be able to TTC again?

Has anybody gotten pregnant after such a cyst was removed?

Hi thinking11. I am a teacher too and I had a dermoid cyst removed a year ago. My advice is to take a minimum of 2 weeks. If you are signed off for four, take four. I appreciate the pressures of school but it's incredibly important u do as little as possible to lessen internal scarring. Before u go in ask them to check for endometriosis and to perform a dye test to ensure tubes are open. If they are aware u are trying for babies they should to this but I urge you to speak up and ensure it's done as it takes no time but does provide you with valuable information going fwd in the future. Take advantage of all help offered. You should avoid lifting and rest. A good idea is to get a box set of DVDs ready for post op ( I recommend 'mad men'!) it helps to take your mind off things. X

Thinking11 · 02/05/2011 21:58

They said there was no sign of endometriosis when I had my initial untrasound which found the dermoid in the first place. They said everything looked fine other than the dermoid and a small fibroid. Will I now need to ask for the dye test after the op or can it be done at the same time?

Wow only 2 weeks off school, that has filled me with hope. Did you have the op key hole or pelvic cut. Most things I have looked at suggest at least 6 weeks for the pelvic incision.

I wont get to talk to my consultant until the morning of the op as he doesnt attend pre op assessments. Im a little unsettled knowing that I am having the op in a weeks time and I havent even spoken to or met the consultant carrying out the op. I just hope that its a simple op with no complications so that I can go on to have children.

Oh, I didn't mention before, but because they knew I had been ttc for a long time, when the consultant went in to remove the cyst, he had a good look at the other tube etc when he was in there. Meant i didn't ever have to have an hsg before starting treatment and it gave me the peace of mind that I'd been checked over thoroughly.

Also, it just came back to me how I felt just after waking up from my op - utter, blissful relief. Best feeling in the world:)

ViolaTricolor · 03/05/2011 08:11

I remember that feeling too. It is really great Smile. Hope you're doing OK Thinking.

Thinking11 · 03/05/2011 19:42

I really hope that thats how i'll be feeling after my op. Hopefully my surgeon will have a good look around too. Its in my notes that im trying to conceive but i still havent spoken to him.

Im bracing myself for the onslaught of personal questions from the parents tomorrow as I sent home the letter tonight telling them that im having an op and im going to be off work for a few weeks. Ive asked all the staff to keep their ears to rumour mill while im off and tell me what conclusions the parents come up with! I might start the rumour that im having a boob job and face lift lol.

OP posts:
ViolaTricolor · 03/05/2011 21:11

I really hope you feel that way too. I found medical professionals massively sympathetic after my op to whatever worries I may have had about the consequences.

I hope the parents have the sense to be discreet. Buy yourself a massive gel bra for when you get back Smile.

Hey thinking, i think we were both on the dec bus. Good luck with your op. I also have a 9 cm cysct on my left ovary. I am seeing a specialist next week with the op potentially being next Fri. I think i am in denial but i thought i would be back to work on the following Monday!! But after reading other people posts i may need to reconsider!! Good luck Thinking, keep us posted. Don't be afraid to lean on people, xx

Thinking11 · 03/05/2011 21:42

Hi cookiemonster, i'm sorry to hear you too have a dermoid cyst. I was so upset when I found out and although it has been relatively quick it feels as if time has been on go slow since then.

I think your aim to get back to work so soon is a bit optimistic but who knows.

I dont know about you but im started to get pretty upset about it all again now, I think its the nerves now the op is so close. I've just found myself in a pool a tears a few minutes ago and i dont know what set it off. I've read that after the op you can be a bit hormonal and emotional for a while, i hope not or i might disapear into a puddle of snot and tears.

Good good with everything and keep in touch, we can be on the dermoid bus!
xx

Hi thinking11 . I had two weeks off and it was keyhole. Mind u my cyst was smaller approx 4cm but please don't worry about time off. You do feel poorly for a while but then you start to see yourself making quite big leaps in feeling better . the dye test is performed when you are under and they should check tubes generally too. Make that very clear that you want that done. Any surgeon should do that as part of the course to check for other obstructions but it's good for u to make it clear you know what should be happening. Xxxxx good luck xxx

Thinking11 · 07/05/2011 21:39

so nervous now! ive spent today madly shopping for things i will need, ive spent far too much and now have enough pj's, nightshirts, dressing gowns, slippers and books to last the whole year!

I spent a bomb on birthday cards and presents too as it seems that everyones birthday falls within the next month, 12 cards!!!

All this has been to occupy my mind to stop me worrying. I just want it over with now.

Keep me posted on your appointment, i hope you get the answers you want xx

You might already be at the hospital, Thinking, but just wanted to check in and say I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. Very very good luck, and I hope you wake up feeling like you've got a weight off your mind.

Aww, I remember that nervous night. I'm sending you loads of good thoughts for now and tomorrow. Let us know how you're doing when you're up to it (and maybe let off steam about the trials of convalescing with family, which I also had to do...) xx

cookiemonster100 · 10/05/2011 22:20

Hi Thinking - hope the op went well....when you are well enough check in and we will catch up. Hope it went well. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thinking11 · 11/05/2011 10:03

Hi, well I'm an emotional wreck and can't stop crying. They found a small cyst on the other ovary so they have removed ovary and tube on one side and half an ovary on the other. They said I should still be able to concieve but I can't stop crying. Hopefully I'll be checking in and feeling better later xx

OP posts:
ViolaTricolor · 11/05/2011 11:01

Oh dear Thinking, have a big unMN hug. This must have been very shocking. I believe they are quite right that you should still be able to conceive, but I'm not surprised you're feeling emotional. I think the aftermath of the anaesthetic doesn't help with that.

Be very very kind to yourself and just curl up and let all the feelings come. Sorry, that sounds very cheesy I'm not good at writing advice but that's what I'd say if you were staying with me, along with bringing you a cup of tea and a duvet, and another hug. xxxx

Wordwork · 11/05/2011 11:07

Best wishes. That must have been an awful shock. I had one ovary removed as a child and had two children with no problems whatsoever. I'm sure that the docs wouldn't give you any false reassurance about fertility. I think you can absolutely take them at their word.

Post-surgery emotions are awful at the best of times, let alone when you have to absorb difficult new information. So expect yourself to feel lousy. Try and hold all your bad feelings in quotemarks and tell yourself that you will see things more positively soon.

xx

ViolaTricolor · 13/05/2011 15:37

Just dropping in to say I'm thinking of you, Thinking, and I hope you feel a little bit better now. Do drop by if you want to talk about it. xx

Thinking11 · 20/05/2011 21:03

Hi I've decided it's time to post again. I'm a half and a half post opp and I'm now beginning to feel human again. It's been pretty rough but I'm over the worst of it.

How are you Cookiemonster? I've been thinking about you, wondering if you need an opp and when.

Thanks loads for everyones support while I was in hospital and I'm sorry I've been so quiet

I had a dermoid cyst when I was 19. I had surgery to have it removed the oncologist who removed it said that it was the size of a newborn. He also said that there was smaller ones and some on my left side that he removed as well.I had to have my right tube and ovary removed .I had my beautiful daughter2 years after that surgery.I am now currently 9 weeks pregnant and at my 8 week visit I recieved my first ultrasound and they found a 10 cm dermoid on my left ovary .dr said baby is ok and in the uterus so thank God for that and there was a heartbeat and baby looked on so I am so greatful for getting pregnant when I did because I will most likely have the left tube and ovary removed so I am blessed to be able to have 1 child and one on the way before I found out that I had another one .I am waiting to get an appointment reguarding this one on the left well the ultrasound tech said there were multiple but the 10cm one was the biggest one she saw so in conclusion.yes u can get pregnant with a cyst and with one ovary.
