I was so ill during my first pregnancy, I'm not sure wether I can take the risk of getting pregnant again.

Hi, when I was pregnant with my daughter whois now 6, I had severe hyperemesis. (Extreem morning sicknes) It lasted 5 months and it got to a point where I was being sick every 20 minutes weather I'd eaten anything or not. I was even waking up during the night to be sick. I was admitted to hospital for 4 days and put on a drip. After the Hyperemesis had calmed down, I suffered depresson which was awful. It really was a miserable pregnancy. I had to take Clomid to concieve our daughter due to PCOS. I'm not sure weather this might've caused it?

We are TTC at the moment and I'm trying to beat my PCOS naturally. I just wondered what the chances are of having Hyperemesis for a second time? and is there anything I could do to reduce my chances of getting it?
I really couldn't stand going through that again, especially now I have my daughter who is home educated and needs a lot of attention due to SEN's.

I'm not sure if I should take the risk or not. I suppose it depends how big a risk it is.

So sorry to hear that you were unwell with your first pregnancy.
I had similar experiences with dd1, very sick as you describe. Hospitalised at 7 weeks for a week, and then again 3 weeks later for 8 days. It was a really miserable time for me as well.

I don't know statistically what your chances are of getting it again. I have a very supportive gp who knew me during my first pregnancy and was very kind to me when I talked about ttc again. In the end we went for it just before dd1 was 3 years old. We were first time lucky with conceiving.

I did have bad morning sickness second time round, but it definitely wasn't hyperemesis. Because it was "just" morning (or rather, all day) sickness, I was able to "manage" it which I couldn't with the hyperemesis.

For me I took the risk because we wanted 2 children (actually I wanted 4 but I will never risk being pregnant again).

dh had the snip within weeks of dd2 being born (he agreed to do it and I was very keen too!)

Meant to add, best wishes with whatever you decide. :)

Thank you. Smile the problem is, you won't know until it's too late.
I'm on a drug to help with PCOS called Metformin. I've only been on it for 3 days and it's made me feel so sick. I actually thought, I hope I'm not pregnant and this is hyperemesis starting again. I thought of ways I could increase my chances of miscarrage if it was. Sad We were trying for another baby but feeling sick just bought it back to me and I realised I couldn't cope with it again.

Hi,

I had hyperemesis with my DD, hospital 3 times, being sick up to 16 times a day until 17 weeks. So I know how it feels to want another baby but be really scared it'll happen again. It's horrible.
The likelihood of it happening again is 60%, which isn't exactly confidence-inspiring.
Have a look on this website: www.helpher.org/

There are a lot of things you can do to prepare for hyperemesis so things are slightly easier than last time and your DD is looked after etc.
