abnormal sperm analysis- help!

Hi Ladies,
If anyone could help me I'd be really grateful. My DH has been for an analysis as we've been ttc number 2 for over a year (DS took 18 months, we had no investigations). It has come back as abnormal, 85% non motile, total count 9million/ml. That's really bad right? I've looked at the normal parameters. Can anyone help me understand just how bad? Anyone with RL experience of this? What on earth are the chances of conceiving with a count like that?
Many thanks

Hi Ellangirl, I am in the same situation as you. Conceived DS in the first month of trying and having been trying for no 2 for over a year now. DH did SA and count was low at 3 million although his motility was 60% which is apparently ok, count really low though. We dont know whether it has always been low or just low in last 12 months. Just done first round of IUI on NHS. If we don't have any luck by the end of the summer I think we are going to look into ICSI. The only thing that I guess we have on our side is that we've done it before so hopefully it'll happen again, I wish you lots of luck...x

Hi daisy, thanks for your reply. I didn't think the NHS funded anything if you have a child already? I suppose IUI isn't even an option for us as there are 0% strong moving sperm, and 85% not moving at all. I really don't know how we have a child! Best of luck to you too- hope that IUI works!

ellangirl I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm sure you've probably googled it a million times by now but is he
overweight?
drinks a lot?
takes hot baths?
does a lot of driving?
does a lot of cycling?
does he take any supplements?
how many samples has he given over a period of time as i believe it can vary quite considerably each time?

I hope you get some answers to help improve things soon.

ellangirl · 16/03/2011 20:56

Hi ninja. In answer to your questions, he is a little overweight but not really, doesn't drink too much, never takes baths, drives to work and back, total an hour each day, doesn't cycle often, takes wellman supplements. Ok, so he could lose weight and stop drinking altogether. How much difference can that make realistically?
He has only given one sample so far, but has to give another one obviously.

dont lose hope!

we had a double whammy - DH sperm was as bad as your DH....most of it didnt swim and there wasnt enough of it! and i had suspected polycystic ovaries....

i gave up any hope of ever having a second child (i thought the first one must have been l-o-n-g odds!) i tried to get pg for a couple of years and then, when i thought "sod it!" within a month it happened. just as id got a full time job...

it can still happen so my advice would be (and its hard and its a cliche) but try and forget about "trying"...live life, enjoy your freedom, enjoy your money while you have it, enjoy each others company and relax.
i hope it happens for you!

ellangirl · 16/03/2011 21:33

Thanks vicar that's an encouraging story. Did you ever consider fertility treatment?

i did. i was due to start a course of Clomid when i got pg. i was going to cross the next bridge when it came to it. but i had just about given up and decided to live, get a full time job and enjoy the one i had and enjoy having some money, i was going to start the clomid and see what happened but....2 months later and bingo! she is now 13.

ellangirl · 17/03/2011 19:22

Well done you vicar, must have been an amazing surprise!

Anyone else got any RL stories of improving motility from 0%?? It must have been better than that at some point!

Help. Trying for baby 2 at 39...After two m/cs at 12wks since Oct 11, we have found out DH has 94% abnormal sperm. Am terrified that there is something wrong with him? We had no problem at all with conceiving the first child in 2010. He goes to the doctor to find out why next week... it is going to be a painfully long week. Of course I am obsessively on-line searching for explanations, help in any form...

Rivergirly · 21/05/2012 20:20

Hi I have 2 ds by ex-h he only had 12% swimming in the right direction- which we found out after 4 years or trying, clomid etc and were just waiting for IUI when I fell pregnant naturally with ds1 after that we thought the chances of another dc highly unlikely but ds1 was all of 9 months old when I discovered ds2 was on the way!!

It does seem that each time we moved on and stopped thinking about having a baby I just seemed to fall pregnant but I do know that it is easier said than done - please dont give up hope xxx
