folic acid

hi there.

I was wondering if someone out there may know the answer to this.

Due to medical reason I am taking 5mg of folic acid for the 12 weeks prior to TTC and then once pregnant for the first 12 weeks.

My question is is there any 'pregnancy' vitamins out there that don't already contain folic acid as on the sides of the packets it clearly states taking more then the recommended amount could be dangerous and I am already taking 5mg so am concerned of 'overdosing' on folic acid (LOL).....is it even possible to overdose on vitamins?

Any feedback would be very much appreciated

xx

Why do you need extra vitamins apart from the folic acid?

Any vitamins labelled "pregnancy" will have folic acid in them, but it is possible to buy multivitamins without folic acid in them.

Too much vitamin A is dangerous during pregnancy so check with the pharmacist.

I don't think you need to take any other vitamins but if you want to you could just take a good B-complex without folic acid must be some of those around.

Having said that... it would be nest to discuss this with your consultant. S/he should be able to give you better guidance.

Hi there - I'm also taking the 5mg dose of folic acid daily. I asked my GP whether I'd be overdosing if I took Pregnacare too (which contains 0.4mg of folic acid) and she said it'd be fine - She said that to overdose on folic acid, I'd have to take a helluva lot more than 5.4mg per day. I've been taking 5mg daily every morning, and 1 (expensive!) Pregnacare tablet every evening for about 3 months now, and have had no adverse reactions at all. Hope this helps!
