Ultrasound showed "bulky cervix". I innocently googled it.....

....eek. Mistake :(

I had a HSG to test if my tubes are clear (for fertility reasons) and it failed despite 4 attempts (and apparently the women who did it was the most experienced HSG person in the local Women's hospital).

I'm not sure exactly why it failed - I was in some pain after the 4 attempts and didn't think to ask Blush

Anyway I had an ultrasound the next day and it showed my cervix was 'bulky' - the sonographer said this could be the reason my HSG failed and refered me back to my consultant for urgent appointment.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? What could be going on? I wish I hadn't googled now :(

What did good old google say about it?

I would say to try not to worry until you have seen your consultant though.

MissFit · 11/02/2011 13:07

If you type "bulky cervix" into google you gets lots of results about cervical cancer. But if you type headache into google you probably get stuff about brain tumours. So I'm not worrying too much (honest....). Eek.

I'm seeing the consultant on Monday so I don't have long to wait.

Hi MissFit I think we spoke before about the possibiliy of you having Ashermans Syndrome.

I had a failed sHG and failed HSG and this is what confirmed the AS diagnosis for me. After a hysteroscopy (when they put a camera in and can actually see whats going on in there) they found that scar tissue was completely blocking the cervix which is why the contrast dye could not pass through (I also had scarring in the uterus too) The gynecologist who did the first failed SHG did not recognise this as a classic case of AS - but the specialist who did the HSG did.

I know its the most horribly scary diagnosis to consider, and its made worse by getting very inaccurate information from GP's and gynecologists who see this problem so rarely that they really dont have good information to give you.

I would really encourage you to get in contact with the ladies on this AS support group. You can find ten years worth of files with information about AS as well as lists of doctors who treat it. You must get advice from someone who specialises in this area, many women who have been treated by ordinary gynecologists with no experience, have had their problem get worse.

There is a doctor in America who is considered one of the best AS doctors in the world, he answers emails for free - why not write to him and send him your scan pictures to see what he says? PM me if you would like his contact details or those of specialists in London too.

Sorry if this isnt what you want to hear, but I have never heard of any other explanation for a failed HSG.

Hi Mummyabroad. Thanks for your reply, I do remember talking to you before. I looked up Ashermans after you mentioned it last time, but I didn't think I had the right symptoms as I have normal regular periods. Do you know if it's possible to have regular periods AND have Ashermans?

Hi MissFit you can have AS with periods but they are usually much lighter than normal. Would you say you get medium/heavy flow on at least some days and the whole thing last 3/4 days? If so, then it would seem odd to have AS.

Sometimes when scar tissue is only present at the cervix it is called "cervical stenosis". Having scar tissue in that area would prevent any HSG fluid from flowing in to the uterus (and most if not all of the blood from flowing out) Your description of the failed HSG made me think of this. When you said your cervix was "bulky" it made me think of scar tissue on the outside, or trapped blood on the inside. Obviously I am not a doctor though, but if you are not being offered a good explanation of why the HSG failed, I think you would benefit from talking to someone who knows about AS because that seems to be the closest area of expertise. They see cases of failed HSG's all the time and so might know all the reasons this might happen.

I hope whatever it is its not serious and that you get good answers on Monday.

Yes my periods last 5 days and are medium/heavy to start with. In fact my periods haven't changed for about 20 years so it doesn't sound like AS.

I've not heard of cervical stenosis so will look that up now. Thanks for your help :)
