Negative pregnancy test but no period?

We have been trying for a second child and I have been concerned that I have not been noticing the usual signs of ovulation like I used to. We conceived our first very easily but not second time round.

I have missed a period but the pregnancy test result was negative? (one of those fancy digital 99% accurate ones)

Periods don't just stop if I have run out of eggs do they?

I am 38 and driving myself mad with this.

Sorry you're having difficulties Sad.

I believe that when you don't ovulate for whatever reason (some women do have the occasional annovulatory month - could be stress, diet, exercise, illness) then you don't have a period.

I think the best thing to do might be to invest in a CBFM or some ov testing sticks, so that you know for certain whether or not you are ovulating.

There is always, of course, a chance that you've got a false negative!

Shar09 · 09/02/2011 14:55

Thanks for the swift response, I think I will buy some ov sticks as I did have some before and they clarified the day when I thought I was ovulating (clear discharge etc) I have been worrying that I have not had any physical changes occurring in my cycle but was shocked to miss a period too.

It would be truly amazing if the reading was false, I'll buy another couple of tests too.

Thanks again.

I don't want to get you excited but I had a false positive and then tested positive a week later with ds (now 6). The first test wasn't technically too early but it didn't show on the pregnancy test.
It could be lots of other things though so approach my idea with caution please - I know how disappointing ttc can be.
Good Luck.

Good luck with it all. I used a CBFM - has done bugger all to get my pregnant but at least I know when/if I'm ovulating (for instance, I have just been quite unwell and am ovulating 4 days late; had it not been for the CBFM I would've thought my insides had packed up entirely!).

And yes - get another test and let us know! How many DPO are you? It might even have been a little early to test.

Shar09 · 09/02/2011 15:12

Does CD mean cycle date? What does DPO mean to?

Feel a bit ignorant to the appreviations!

Oh sorry! CD - cycle day. DPO = days past ovulation...

Shar09 · 09/02/2011 15:17

Ahhh just found the acronyms bit!

I am only three days late but it's normally a 28 day cycle.

Hm. Well - I vote you get some more sticks in and get thoroughly dehydrated overnight so you have morning wee the colour of coke, and test again!

Shar09 · 09/02/2011 15:19

I suppose my main worry is that I have left it too late to have another baby because I wanted a two year gap.

Right then no fluids after 6pm! Thanks so much!

well - obviously 38 isn't 19, but nor is it 48. One of my best pals has just had her second at 40, and my sister's pregnant with her 4th at 41, and a friend of mine had her sixth (eek!) at 44. So I mean, you can't rest on your laurels if you see what I mean, but anecdotes and medicine alike suggest it's unlikely to be too late full stop!

BlooferLady · 09/02/2011 15:21

Oh Christ, slightly worried you'll be found passed out and foaming at the mouth, desperate for liquids!!

Shar09 · 09/02/2011 15:23

Alright then, just a few sips!

A friend of mine with 2 dc had negative pregnancy tests and missed periods in both her pregnancies, so it does happen. (She was 5 months gone with dd1, when she found out she was pregnant and had been frantic about all those missed periods!!!!)

Also, I'm sure the stress of trying to conceive can play havoc with your cycle.

Good luck - hope your wishes soon come true.
