The good news is that I didn't have to have an internal scan, as the sonographer was able to pick up a decent image from the abdominal xray.

The bad news is that I do have cysts.

The other good news is that there are signs of a functioning follicle.

The other bad news is that it's much smaller than it should be at this stage in my cycle, which apparently means either another long cycle with unpredictable ovulation, or no ovulation. (Does this sound about right to you all? This is what the sonographer told me).

I gather that it's possible that I might just have a few cysts but not PCOS. I'll have to wait to get the blood test results from my doctor to know if I have the syndrome or not. If I do, then we can medicate. But what happens if the bloods come back normal? What course of action is likely for someone with cysts but not the syndrome, and long cycles?

Any experiences/tips most appreciated!

Hi,

I have no idea, but I am booked in next week for an ultrasound, and I didn't realise that you would get some information straight away.

Thanks for replying, odb! Yep, the sonographer should be able at least to tell you what she sees - though obviously, only the doc can give a full diagnosis, taking the scan results into consideration along with the blood tests.

mmm, now I am sure that I have had a blood test for PCOS and although my progesterone level is almost non existant, the oestrogen was fine and didn't suggest PCOS.

I don't know what they are expecting to see on the scan, but the dr. mentioned the possibilty of prescribing clomid later on. From my understanding, this can make your cycles more normal but also triggers ovulation. If you have a functioning follicle, I would have thought this would do the trick. I think most women have small cysts throughout their lives and they don't cause a problem.

Please don't quote me on any of this though!! But clomid does seem to be the first form of help in stories like this. I will let you know what mine comes back with because we could be in the same/similar boat.

That sounds about right! Will be interesting to hear what you find at the scan, and what I find from the bloods...

Did you have the blood test done on a specific day in your cycle? My doc didn't specify for me - she actually said there wasn't much point, because we didn't know for sure when I'd expect to ovulate - but now I wonder if this was the right call...

I've had 2 progesterone tests done on day 23 of a 30-35 day cycle. I have a CBFM which has given me a peak on day 25 for the last two months. This month I am having the test on day 28 but the CBFM has peaked on day 20 - so who knows what the results will be!

I think the first test had 2 lots of blood taken and I think this was for PCOS etc. I say I think because the dr said the blood work was normal but I don't remember a specific visit to test for it.

Both blood tests showed no ovulation and the progesterone was less than 5. If my CBFM is right then we are missing seeing ovulation but I think there should be some progesterone present before hand. I'm not sure.

That's really interesting, odb. Fingers crossed for us both!

Try not to worry!

I have PCOS and to be honest I think the word cysts sounds more scary! The GPs will be lovely though, and you can have medication to increase your ovulation there's also a small procedure you can have that gets rid of cysts on your ovaries.

I have no idea if this is the sort of reply you wanted,i just remember when I was going for all the tests and everything -I had the internal too eugh - it was just a bit scary and unnerving!
