No safe time really! But I would say during your period is by far the safest. Then perhaps in the 2 or 3 days afterwards. Remember that sperm can survive for up 5 days inside you!!!!

Why?

I thought there was a sfety zone.
You can only get pregnant about 10 days of your cycle

It all depends on your individual cycle.

A "typical woman" (whatever that is), has a 28 day cycle, and ovulates on day 14. Sperm can apparently live inside you for up to 5 days, and you egg lives for up to 24 hours (I think). So the "typical woman"'s highest risk time would be from day 9 or 10 to perhaps day 15 or 16.

HOWEVER, not all women are "tyical" by any means, and the only way you will get to know your cycle is by spending some time observing it - either using a Persona, or by taking your temperature every morning. It would not be at all safe to assume anything about your cycle.

Pretty much the only guaranteed "safe time" without knowing your cycle is during your period, as Fangache says.

Hugs,
Artoo.

if you think back to all those lessons they try and give people when they are young they say there is no safe time, there is the smallest possibility that you can get pregnant at any time in your cycle even during your period. dont just rely on a so called safe time to keep you from getting pregnant!

I have always worked on 'safe time' but forgotten it! Never had unwanted pregnancy and always concieved when I wanted, maybe had to try a couple of times!
I know when I ovulate as I have pains so know to avoid that! Or to do it then when I want to get pregnant!

Why not? Have you recently had a baby?

Seriously though.... it might have worked before, but your cycles can change!!!! They did with my Mum after 11yrs!!!!!!!

If you really don't want a pregnancy, then no time is safe. Even regular cycles can change. Knowing when you ovulate won't necessarily help either, because sperm can hang around for 5 days and if you ovulate unexpectedly early you could be stuffed.

I know three women who only had sex during their "safe" period. They are all intelligent women who knew their cycles inside-out. Guess how I met them? Ante-natal classes.

If it's important to you not to get pregnant again, you really need to use a more reliable form of contraception.

so how do people who are against contreception do it?
If it has worked for me for the last 20 years why wont it now?

Auntmandy - Like WWB said why use no contraception if you know you really don't want to get pg???? That doesn't make much sense to me! I have the coil as I know I don't want to get pregnant just now..... but also know I will want to again in the future.

I just don't understand why you would risk going through that again. Unless of course there is a medical reason why you can't go on the pill/have a coil fitted.

Auntmandy.... whats the difference between timing it to lower the chances of getting pregnant.... or your DH wearing a condom to lower the chances even more!

And what would you do if you did get pregnant?

Report
auntymandy · 06/10/2005 13:22

doesnt anyone ever just wing it?
We use condoms but now and again its nice not to!

If I got pregnant I would have a baby.
I would love it as much as the others.
I am considering getting steralised.

Auntmandy - I know lots of people that don't like contraception..... but they don't like the idea of getting pregnant much more!!! So I don't know anyone that would be so careless as to just wing it!! (Unless they secretly want a baby )

If I got pregnant it wouldnt be the end of the world, but i dont ache to get pregnant if thats what you are thinking!
Wouldnt trick DH.
I just thought there was a time in your cycle to conceive and a time not to.
Guess I have just been lucky

Auntmandy - There are times when you can't and times when you can conceive........ BUT and this is a huuuuuuuuuge BUT.... you can NEVER guarantee your cycle will be the same from month to month.

My friend used this technique and it turned out she conceived the day after her period stopped. For some reason she just ovulated really early on in that cycle! Her dd is now 3.

There are kits you can buy that you can test when you are ovulating though. What about those? You can buy them in Boots.

yes but if the guide is 10 days before and after the 1st day of your period and you go say 5 or 7 days you are well within the safety zone arent you?

OP posts:

Fangache · 06/10/2005 13:35

Auntmandy...... NO There is NO safety zone! You can ovulate at any point in your cycle..... except probably when you are bleeding heavily with AF!!!!!!!!

Report
Fangache · 06/10/2005 13:36

The guide is exactly that..... a guide...and only works if you have TEXT BOOK cycle each and every time! Which noone has.

Its like the guide that tells you a pregnancy is 40wks long from your last period...... yet only 5% are born on their due date!

Report
auntymandy · 06/10/2005 13:36

oh well, shouldnt have asked! thought someone else here might use this method. will stick to 5 days either side then instead of 7

Auntmandy - Why shouldn't you have asked??? You got an answer, thats the best MN can do really. What were you looking for?

Report
Fangache · 06/10/2005 13:39

If you only wanted people to come on and say "Yes you are perfectly safe to carry on bonking using no contraception"... then that just wasnt' going to happen really.

If you know your cycle.... and you know when you ovulate and you know you are confident you will not get pregnant.... then their really was nothing anyone here could say otherwise.
