Hi

My doctor has prescribed me 5mg of provera 3 times a day for 5 days to bring on a period. To others that have taken Provera - is this the same as you were presribed? I thought I remember others saying they only took 1 pill. thanks

Hello,

I have taken the "provera challenge" twice, passed once (i.e. got a withdrawal bleed) and failed once.

I was prescribed tablets for 10 days both times. The standard dose is between 5 and 10 mg for ten days, and yes it was only 1 pill for me. I dont think that the number of pills is that relevant, I was on high dose estrogen recently, the pills are each 2mg and I had to take three a day to get the correct dose.

Your course is only for 5 days though, is that because the doctors knows where you are in your cycle and is giving your natural progesterone a boost? Or perhaps giving you more mg over less days has the same effect?

I am afraid I have no medical training so I dont know why your dose is different to mine. What does Dr Google say? Grin

Thanks. I have not had a period since coming off the pill about a year ago (PCOS), so I don't have cycles. Dr Google seems to say that the highest dose is 10mg not 15mg...I just hope I don't get bad side effects.

Hi HallieGirl,

gosh a year seems like a really long time. Have you had blood tests and scans for PCOS?

I didnt have periods for 7 months but mine turned was caused by Ashermans syndrome (my cervix was scarred closed, so the blood couldnt escape) I have had surgery now and got my periods back, just started TTC.Smile

At least with a five day course you wont have to wait too long to find out what is going on.
I remember just how awful the waiting was.

Hope it comes soon,

Let me know how you get on.

xxx

Yes - a year seems like a really long time! I have had blood tests and scans for PCOS. Blood tests were fine and I don't have any symptoms (apart from no periods), so I was very surprised when the scan showed loads of cysts :( Anyway fingers crossed this works... Glad you seem to have sorted your problem - good luck!
