queenrollo here's a list of tests that my GP did:
Two blood tests.
In the first blood test they filled three sample bottles, and this is what they tested for:
Fasting blood glucose - to rule out diabetes
Virology - to double check that I had developed immunity to Rubella
Endocrinology - thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to rule out hypothyroidism, FSH/LH (high FSH levels can be indicative of ovarian failure or impending menopause). High LH levels can be indicative of polycytic ovaries
Prolactin - high levels can inhibit ovulation
Oestrogen - they checked this was within normal range
Second blood test: completed 7 days before your period is due. This is sometime misleadingly called the Day 21 progesterone test. A level of greater than 30 confirms that you are ovulatory.
Body Mass Index - BMI of over 29 or under 19 can adversely affect your ability to conceive
Smear test - if not up to date
STI screen - they are looking for chronic chlamydia infection that can cause PID / tubal infertility
My GP also checked my cycles were regular, again this is indicative of ovulation. Your GP should not fob you off with irregular cycles as this MAY be indicative of polycystic ovaries - blood test for LH and progesterone can be indicative of this
My GP also checked I was taking folic acid and did a manual external and internal pelvic examination, presumably feeling for cysts or lumps. I understand this is more unusual to do, but my DH was with me, who is also a GP, so I may have got gold star treatment.
She then referred DH to andrology for a semen analyais. Once all the results were back (all normal in our case) she sent a referral letter to fertility. They have now seen us and referred me for an HSG.
HTH.
