And able to reassure me?

I'm going to have one on Monday morning and don't really feel like I've any idea what to expect.

Know it involves x-ray and pumping coloured dye around my bits. Is it a long process? Painful? How do they get all the dye out again???

I think it have! Is it the one with the dye into your tubes? Before I post any details, just let me know if I'm on the right track.

Littlefish · 22/09/2005 21:57

I am just so stupid some days. It really would help if I actually read messages properly!

Yes, Jamiesam I have had it!!!

It only took about 10 minutes. It was definitely uncomfortable, a bit like bad period cramps. However, it was definitely a mangageable pain. I just did lots of deep breathing and tried really hard to relax (easier said than done I know!). I think I took nurofen before I went as well.

The dye just sort of leaks out afterwards (sorry!) I think they give you a sanitary towel, but you might like to take your own just in case.

The main thing to remember is that you're going because it will give you more information. Hopefully all will be well and you will be soon on your way to having a baby.

The staff at the hospital I went to were absolutely lovely and one of the nurses held my hand all the way through. I felt quite tearful during the procedure because I was worried about what they might tell me. As it turned out all my bits and bobs were absolutely fine. As for my dh...... well that's another story!

Good luck on Monday.

jamiesam · 22/09/2005 22:03

Thanks Littlefish, I'll remember the nurofen. Not sure I can remember the deep breathing though!

i had one on the 14th july it was painful 4 me as i was v up tight about it only lasts 10mins the nurses are v good and understand that its emotional which it is and u will probably cry i was in period type pain for 12 hrs and used hot water bottles but after that i was fine and even went out with my friends the next nite. The imortant thing is it identifies any problems if any luckily for me (got results on mon ) there wasnt good luck take a pain killer try and relax and be kind to yourself ie take theday of work lie on the couch with a hot water bottle and watch a film good luck xx

zippy539 · 22/09/2005 23:15

Sorry you're going through this jamiesam. Mine was a flippin' disaster! It's a very simple and quick proceedure but they couldn't get the pipe thing up me so in the end I had it done under GA along with a laperoscopy. Everyone was lovely though, and second the advice about a painkiller and sanitary towel.

Good, good luck and hope you get a good result. The brilliant thing about this proceedure is, whatever the result, you have something to go on and you can move forward to the next stage - whatever that might be.

MeerkatsUnite · 23/09/2005 07:00

Jamiesam,

A HSG is a tubal x-ray; its a useful test to have as it shows any deformities inside the tube. Also it gives information not usually seen under a lap operation.

Would suggest you bring a sanitary towel along with your for afterwards. I was given two painkillers beforehand by the nurse and this helped. My HSG didn't take all that long; about 10 minutes or so.

There shouldn't be any pain providing the dye is injected really slowly and with care.

They may tell you the result of this straight away; if not you should be followed up soon after and the results of the x-ray shown to you.

munz · 23/09/2005 08:08

yes I had one I'd recommend taking two neurofen about half hour b4 u go in, for me it was more uncomfortable - esp when they blew the balloon thingy up to block the cervix - felt like I needed to do a big poopie! anyhow it's a bit odd when the die goes in - doesn't hurt at all - stung a bit. but nothing major, got white knuckles thou! and the other lady in the room was lovely and heldmy hand, erm, then was all finished - remebr to take a pad just incase - beleive me hospital pads are well bigger than nappies! (thats incase the die comes out - think u pass it out when weeing.) lol.

oddest part about it for me was seeing my innards for the first time - v odd, I got my results straight away.

Important thing- don't forget to take all of the antibotics they give u to reduce the risk of infection, had it on the thurs morning and waited till the sat morning b4 BD, managed to get PG that month but unfortunatly it didn't stick. got PG the very month after the m/c. fingers crossed urs will be quick as well. there's another thread on concerption - i'll have a hunt for u.

HSG thread

Littlefish · 23/09/2005 08:44

By the way Jamiesam, I DID get my baby!!! She's now 10 months old and absolutely gorgeous!

Chickyboo · 23/09/2005 09:06

I also took painkillers before HSG.
Its more uncomfortable than painful.
It can be emotional but I think the staff are used to this.

By the way we now have a noisy 14mth old dd.

good luck

Nixz · 23/09/2005 09:10

Ive also had one done, sorry to say it did hurt as i was very uptight but it only lasts a minute. Defo take some painkilers, and try to tak someone with you.

jamiesam · 24/09/2005 22:03

Thanks everybody, not been around since my last post.

Thanks for link too munz.

I hadn't really thought about pain/emotions and how it might affect me afterwards - although I did sob all the way to my last gynae appt, and that was just for a chat!!! My hsg is booked for 9.30 on Mon so I was going to take some work in to read between dropping the ds's at nursery and the appt, then drive to work - hope that is realistic.

Last question if anyone still around - is it absolutely necessary for your period to have ended? I'll be on day 9 and this has turned out to be a surprisingly long period (esp given that it was at the end of a 14 day cycle - what the hell's going on there) - so I might still be bleeding a little on Monday. Sorry if tmi...

I think u're ment to have finished, and refrain from unprotected sex - theres' no way it can be done if there's a chance ur PG that much I know for def.

I got DH to drive me home from the hospital (we had a cup of tea there first) then had another at home and I drove to work about an hour later- all I say thou if u do go to work - u should be fine but take things easy - no lifting etc. expect things to be a bit sore and tender down there.

good luck - hope it's all clear for you.

jamiesam · 24/09/2005 22:26

Hi Munz. Thanks hsg oracle! Not sure if I'll be able to go then. Bit of a small window round here - got to go within the first ten days of cycle, but the clinic is only on a Monday and a Friday. They don't try to make it easy do they!

(If I do go, happily no lifting at work for me - just a public meeting late aft/early evening - should be fine by then I think, don't want to sit on 'top table' groaning! Lol - well, you've got to really. I'm sick of all this palaver)

OP posts:
munz · 24/09/2005 22:29

lol - don't be soft, just going on what I was told here, ours is the same first 10 days, don't know if they will do if u're bleeding - only incase of infections of something - don't forget have ur antibotics. (don't want to be causing infections) might be worht ringing the hosp first on monday if you can make it in? ooh and def take ur own pads - can't stress that enough - if ur hopsital's anything like ours the pads - well might as well have been two of those big rolls of cotton wool lol - not nice!

jamiesam · 24/09/2005 22:34

Thanks, you made me smile again.

Don't know what the MN code is for no reply needed!

OP posts:
jamiesam · 26/09/2005 13:04

In case anyone sees this - thanks everyone, it was absolutely fine, hardly hurt at all - just a feeling of pressure as the dye went in. Dr said everything looks completely ok in there, so onwards to the next investigation...

(Happily, physiotherapist told me after ds2 and big tear that I had virtually no sensation down below - hence no pain.)

OP posts:
munz · 26/09/2005 15:32

glad it went well for u hon, been thinking about it this morning - fingers crossed for this month 4 u.

jamiesam · 26/09/2005 21:19

Thanks, that's really kind. Not sure if I'll be 'allowed' to bd before I ovulate this month. C'est la vie!
