hello

Can anyone help me? i'm due to come on tomorrow and been ttc for 5 months. On Sunday I did a Clearblue +/- test and got a really faint positive within a few minutes. Because it was so faint I sent my husband out for more tests, given that it was Sunday evening only Tescos was open so he bought Tescos tests...which were both negative. So yesterday I went and bought Superdrug tests, I did one today and one yesterday...both negative!? Whats going on?! Any help appreciated...

clearblue are known for false positives. Beware the thin blue line, its not real. Superdrug have a 10miu detection level which is incredibly sensitive - if superdrug is negative then I would say its highly likely that the clearblue is a falst +ve.
So sorry, I know how crap that feels, I have been the victim of CB so many times.

Thank you...I'm so annoyed with clear blue for selling such rubbish especially when they're not exactly cheap.. The helpline lady insists that it's positive though...I'm just finding all this waiting so hard!

The other option could be that it was a true +ve but you have had a chemical pregnancy ie you've conceived but implantation / development of the embryo hasn't been successful. They reckon that 50% of conceptions fail to implant / miscarry when AF due. This would explain why you got a +ve followed by a -ve.

If this has happened, it really is nothing to worry about (although it can be upsetting). What it does tell you is that everything is working fine and this one just wasn't a sticky one. Lots of luck for your next cycle TTC. FX for you.

I had a false positives with 'early detection' tests and then gone on to have a negatives with bog standard (and much cheaper) tests on two separate occasions. It was too stressful! The next time (and the last) I just waited until my period was clearly overdue and did a test then (+ve).
KCow makes a good point, in which case maybe better to wait until a good few days after due date to avoid unnecessary stress.
Best of luck!

Agree with you Autumnberry the added stress and potential heartbreak of testing too early isn't necessarily a good thing. Sad

It it's of any interest, DH is a GP and he doesn't believe in false positives as they are so very rare (unless a woman is post / peri-menopausal at which point HCG levels are naturally elevated). He always assumes a positive is true if one of his patients tells him that she has home tested. (He never repeats the pg test either). He firmly believes a +ve followed by a -ve is a failed implantation.

I agree. A positive followed by negative is usually a chemical pg. I have had 2 and its bloody horrible.

I have now vowed never to early test again. Sad

Thank you all. i don't think i've had a chemical preg tho because the Tesco tests were literally a few hours later - I think it was a faulty clearblue. (Although if I'm honest a tiny part of me is hoping the clearblue is right and the rest are just not picking it up yet...guess I'll find out in time!). No more early testing for me - I can't cope with the ups and downs!

I used to think I was having chemical pregnancies, but the only test that ever gave me a line was clearblue. Then I tried one with water - it gave me the same thin blue line. So in the case of the tests I had, they were error tests. I wont say they were false positives, as the problem is that the dye from the horizontal negative line leaks into the well for the antibody strip. Thats why the line appears so quickly, but doesnt get significantly darker.

The lowdown with clearblue is that if there is a fat line to the right of a skinny blue line, then its positive, if its a very thin blue line on the left side of where the test line should be, and no fatter line to the right of it, then its negative.
Personally I wouldnt waste money on them every again, after all the false hope I have had from them. The 3 for a quid dip sticks from home bargains give more accurate results.

Oh no, CB +/- tests really ARE SHIT.

I had a very very thin line slightly on the left edge of the positive line a few times. It isn't a positive according to the CB hotline.

Send the test into the helpline with a mahoosive letter of complaint. They should replace your test with a digital one (much better).
