My partner is undergoing a VR at the end of this month. He had the V done 2yrs 10 months ago but I was wondering if anyone had gone through the same process and what stories they have. What are my chances of getting pregnant? Can you provide any hints/tips...:) We already have one child each through prevous relationships but wish to have one together.

My uncle did this. They had 2 boys and then went on to have a girl. She's now 14!

Good luck!

smileyhappy67 · 11/10/2010 15:10

Thank you how long did it take and how long did he have between V and VR?

:)

Hello smileyhappy! My DH had 6 years between V and VR. He had the VR in Dec 2009 and our baby is due 2010 :o
I think success rates really vary, we were told 50% chance of pregnancy but that was before he had it done. He was only able to have one side done in the end so our chances were even less but it still happened...

fedupttcnosuccess · 19/10/2010 16:44

did you just get jiggy in the normal way afterwards, or were you advised to take any supplements or given any other advice which would help you achieve pregnancy quicker/with success? How old were you both?

sickoftheholidays · 20/10/2010 14:12

Another interested party joins the thread..... we are hoping to have a reversal in the new year (original op in september 2008 so around 2.5 years ago) and am interested to see how likely it is that we will be able to have another child.

Sapphire1 · 21/10/2010 21:42

I am 30 and DH is 33. Our doc told us to BD every other day and not just around ov - helps keeps the pipes clear lol! We did get given a list of supplements, but DH didn't bother to take them half the time. One thing we did use was preseed (a sperm friendly lubricant), that is supposed to help assist the fellas on their way, he he! We did conceive on our first month of trying so I've no idea if it worked or if it was a bit of a fluke. We didn't start trying til 3 months after VR for various reasons, but incidentally that's roughly how long it takes for new sperm to mature.

fedupttcnosuccess · 21/10/2010 21:54

congratulations, sapphire Grin. when is baby due, do you know what you're having? xxx

Sapphire1 · 22/10/2010 15:13

Thanks fedup! Baby is due in 8 weeks, and is a girl xx

gumblossom · 24/10/2010 08:39

Hi. My Dh had a reversal in 2007 and it took us 7 months to conceive our little boy. Keep in mind we had "age" as I factor. I was 41 when my DS was conceived.

Keeping the pipes cleared every day or every other day is very good for keeping the tubes from scarring over and getting the sperm count up.

Both of us took supplements. Vitamin E and C are very good for healing, selenium and zinc are good for sperm. A healthy diet will help, and he should stay away from cigarettes and too much alcohol.

I hope you get your baby!

When we went to the urologist to ask about the reversal he was quite negative and suggested we go straight to ivf (due to my age). I'm glad we didn't listen to him.He told us we had a 50 - 70 % chance as we had proven fertility and it had been 6 years since the vasectomy.

Don't be put off if it takes a while. It is common to take 12 months when a reversal is involved.

Wow well there has definately been some very positive stories. My partner goes in this Tuesday for VR. Very scared and very excited all at the same time. Dont intend to rush into bed. Im already taking Multivitamins with folic acid, they say to take these 3 months prior to conceiving, obviously we have not been using any contraception as not needed so I do not have to wait for pill to get out of my system. Partner is slowing down on smoking, and coffee he doesnt drink alcohol so thats another thing. i want to increase chances but at same time dont think its good to cut everything out although I hate smoking but these are his things and its just something that we will cross that bridge when we come to it. hope your not too fed up...I know she is just definately worth it :) congratulations, you'll have to let me know when she is born. Will update you all with some more info after Tuesday :-)

Ooh, good luck for tomorrow smileyhappy - fingers crossed for you. I would imagine it's fine for your OH to keep smoking - I sure as hell couldn't get DH to quit the strongbow :o Looking forward to your updates...

smileyhappy67 · 25/10/2010 21:50

Hey Sapphire, thank you :) getting nervous now. Night bag already packed and I have my magazines at the ready. Will message you end of week with the (fingers crossed) good news that op has been succesfull.
Take care x x

Just thought I would update you on the VR OP. All has gone successful so far. Tubes didnt have any scarring and it went smoothly. There was a lot of liquid flowing through the pipes. He is a little sore and quite purple as the cut was a little bigger than intended as the the V was a little butchered. Well now we just have to wait a few weeks to BD and then we will be on ur way to practising breeding...lol...update you again soon x x :)

OP posts:
Sapphire1 · 27/10/2010 20:00

Aw, glad it went well. He'll probably be sore for a couple of weeks - my DH was walking funny for a while and looked a right state! Wishing him a speedy recovery x

smileyhappy67 · 28/10/2010 19:09

Thanks hun, he is not feeling too bad today, he is obvioulsy is purple in places but glad it was all a success. so far anyway. The consultant said it all went very well, and the liquid was going through fine and the scarring from the orginal V there was none, so fingers crossed. Hope your pregnancy is seeming to drag, before long it will be christmas and your bundle of joy will be here :)

sickoftheholidays · 29/10/2010 12:10

FX for you smiley, hope he recovers soon so you can, ahem, get down to the task in hand.

DH is currently waiting to be referred, and has been somewhat ambivalent about having his bits messed with (again) but did perk up and become more enthusiastic when I mentioned what gumblossom said about keeping the pipes cleared and said he assumed I would be willing to help him with that men eh? so predictable.

marge2 · 29/10/2010 12:22

Another success story for you. DH had his V 10 years before the VR. I was 35 and he was 46 when the VR was performed. We were told that as the V had been such a long time before, the chances of the mechanics of the actual 'plumbing' going back togther as low and so were the chances of the sperm returning to normal. That with my age we were given a 20/30% chance of having a baby. Well I was pregges in less than a month after the VR. GrinGrin

We now have two boys together and poor old Dh has had V number two.!!!!!! His choice - not mine - I would have loved another baby, but that would have made 5 for him so I can understand his point of view!

Best of luck!!!

terrier141 · 16/02/2011 15:18

My hubby had the reversal in April 2008 - op was a success in terms of surgery and sperm getting through etc - but it is such poor quality that we still have no baby Sad

merdypop · 31/05/2012 20:05

Hi all!!
Know this is an old thread but was wondering how you all were?? My OH is waiting for referral :) x

Fay30 · 01/06/2012 10:00

Wer'e still trying :(

He had the VR on 08/07/2010
It was a success in terms of surgery, both sides connected.
Time between V and VR was about 20 years, but we live in hope :)
He has 4 from previous.

The specialist told us, it was a 15% to 20% chance for swimmers.
The quality is low, and they don't swim very strongly.

Dh had his vr in August 2011, we cracked on straight away and tried for 6 months with no luck. A sa in feb revealed that there were sperm present but that they were not enough to get me pregnant and also the motility and forward progression was very poor. We made the decision to go with ivf/icsi and i have just found out i am pregnant after our first cycle.
To give you a little more info, dh had just shy of 3 years between the vasectomy and the reversal. He did have a lot of testicular pain after the op right up to the reversal, and the reversal op revealed considerable scarring on the tubes and also one side had a large granuloma right next to an artery which meant they couldn't reattach that side. So all things considered, we were fighting agains the odds from the get go.

Fay30 · 06/06/2012 16:50

FANTASTIC NEWS rogersmellyonthetelly ,
your lucky just 3 years between V and VR.
My dp has many more years, but still the motility and forward progression was very poor.

I guess we are going to just keep trying normally until this September, then just as you did we will go with ivf/icsi

Great you got first time pregnant.

Fay
