Hey, my first preg was twins, most people say that they are identical, though some say they are not, but we always thought they are identical, now they are almost four, and we are planning to go ahead to have another one, just curious to know if there are anyone with more than one set of twins... ???

Identaical twins are random. Non identical are genetic. If you have 1 set of non identicalsm your chances or having another are 70-80%.

Surely when you were scanned they could tell you if they were identical due to them sharing a sac or having their own?

I'm a twin, I have a twin brother, I also have twin sisters non-identical who are 5 years younger than meSmile.

Earlier this year I saw a lady with 2 sets of twins, toddlers and new born, she also had an older son.

You can tell for definite by sending off DNA samples to the Multiple Births Foundation.

We did so with our twins, who we were told were non-id as in separate sacs but looked incredibly alike once born. The test confirmed that they were id. I think it cost about £70 but we wanted to know for sure, for their benefit, for any future health problems so we'd know if one could be a donor and also re having any future kids.

I looked into the chances of twins again when we were ttc DD3 and because they were id my chances were the same as someone who had never had twins.

I think if they are id, your chances are higher. This site gives the stats:

that's interesting, detectivePotato

me and my sister are fraternal twins, the only set on either side of the family going back generations. me and my sister have had singletons, a boy and a girl each, with our girls both born on fridays!

will our children have twins?

DetectivePotato · 09/10/2010 19:34

My best friend has twins (fraternal) and her dad was a fraternal twin. Her sister didn't have twins though but it is genetic on the womans side as its to do with the woman releasing 2 eggs, which is genetic. The splitting of the egg is random.

If you already have 1 set of fraternal twins, your chances are 70-80% of having another set! My friend done loads of research on it and the docs told her her chances.

It is likely one of your children (the girls) could have twins. Nothing to do with males though.

What does it mean if it's a double placenta?

Just curious as my first PG with DS was weird, alot of probs including a big unexplained bleed at 12.5 weeeks.

When he was born the placenta was a huge double placenta where the midwife had to count 2 of everything to make sure it was all out.

Said she had never seen that happen before. Neither had any of the doctors as it was a C section.

I wondered if he started as a twin?

There can be confusion when scanning twins...at first the sonographer wasn't sure if i was carrying identicals or not..and then a bit later they decided at a scan that they were non-identicals.

When i had my c-section they told me my boys were identical after all as there was 1 placenta, thin membranes between them and they had twin to twin transfusion syndrome as there was a weight difference!! But they were wrong!! They are so non-identical they don't even look related Grin. SO it is always that clear on scans.

I then went on to have another set 3 years later..boy/girl this time so there was no confusion Wink
