Has anyone had a procedure to check that your tubes are not blocked / damaged?

Sorry not sure of the name Blush

I think they use dye to check your tubes for blockages or damage. Consultant is sending me an appointment for this I and just wondered if anyone could:

a) tell me what it's called so I can google it

b) tell me what it's like and how long it takes and do I need to take a day off work

Wished I'd asked consultant but I never think of these things until afterwards!

Hi

It's a HSG, it's done under a local so I think you should be ok to go back to work. Not sure how ling it takes etc

Good luck!

HyCoSyg I think is the other name. It's quite painful, especially if you do have a blockage, and the antibiotics brought me out in a rash, but it doesn't necessarily require a day off work.
I had it after 18 months of TTC, and although they didn't find anything, I conceived 3 times in my next 7 cycles. My consultant was not at all surprised, anecdotally it's not uncommon to get pg immediately after, so although it's not a treatment per se I would recommend you don't schedule it for a month when DP will be away, IYSWIM.

Ok thanks row78 and Dilys :) That's all good to know.

Also do you have to have it at a certain time of the month? What if my appointment comes through for a day when I'm on my period, would they still do it ?

And also do you have to stop TTC the month before you have it just in case your're already pregnant when they do it (but don't know yet)?

I think you have to have it in the days in-between period and ovulation for obvious reasons.

You may also be offered a laparoscopy, where they perform a "fill and spill" with dye to make sure that your tubes are clear. This needs to be done under general anaesthetic but is key hole surgery. With the lap, they use a camera so they will have a good look around at your ovaries and uterus as well to rule out or in issues such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Endometriosis. It's usually done as a day case, so no need to stay overnight in hospital, but you are a bit uncomfortable for a couple of days afterwards. When I had mine, I was not told to stop TTC, they simply check where you are in your cycle and do a pregnancy test before you sign your consent form on the day. Can't remember if you needed to be at a particular point in your cycle, but as I was annovulatory due to PCOS, it was fairly irrelevant for me!

I had a hycosy and it was easy! Not even a little bit painful or uncomfortable, very quick and easy!

I think they ask you to call the clinic/hospital when your period starts to book a date around 7/10 days afterwards

Hiya,
The procedure I had was called a Hysterosalpingogram. This was about a year ago. Basically they squirt dye up your bits and x-ray you. If memory serves me right there was a tilting table involved!

I had to call to book it with the hospital (I think it had to be a week after the first day of a period, but can't quite remember now).

I was given painkillers beforehand, just paracetamol I think, and yes, it was sore, like really intense period pain. I did take the day off work, and was glad I did because it did make me feel a bit wobbly.

I was in the hospital for about 4 hours, by the time I'd been checked in, given the painkillers, and had had the procedure.

Got pregnant the following month, which according to my GP is not unusual! Smile Good luck OP!

My experience was very similar to skippingturtle also called hysterosalpingogram and I had it 6 years ago.

I did find it uncomfortable, like bad period pain. I was told the results straightaway - both tubes blocked and likely to need IVF. We had been ttc for two years.

Two months later I was pg with dd1, then I became pg with dd2 the first time we tried. I am now 20wks pg with no 3 again first time of trying.

Good luck and dreams do come true Smile
