Hi,
wanting some advice as came off the pill in january to start ttc but have not had a period yet.
Was diagnosed with pco after an ultrasound and prior to the pill had 3/4 periods a year. But now having none!

GP has put me on metformin but after 2 months on that, still no change.
I am not overweight, have no other health probs or other symptoms of pcos... but feel helpless to improve my chances of having a baby.

any ideas or ways i can help myself / things i should be asking GP for?!

Thanks!

sorry to hear about your situation
Can you maybe ask to your GP to be referred to a consultant? I've found that GP at my surgery know almost nothing about gynea/fertility problems so you'll probably be better off by seeing a consultant

How much Metformin are you taking? Maybe you need to up the dosage, I've recently been told to up mine. Agnus Castus is very good for regulating cycles as well.

I agree with Luce, ask for a referral to a consultant as well [waves to Luce].

And have faith... I was diagnosed with pco in 2007 and now have a lovely 2 year old! Smile

Oooh, forgot to add, this book is great as well!

Lorna

You really ought to see a gynae asap. PCO is not a condition that should be messed around with by GPs under any circumstances!.

You should be referred as a matter of course to a gynae at a subfertility unit.

Do not self medicate with AC as it can in some cases make the underlying hormonal imbalance worse.

Collette Harris is herself a PCOSer and has written many books on the subject. She has also written some cookbooks as well; sometimes following a low GI/GL eating plan can be helpful.

hi there; Just thought I would share...if thats ok . I havent had a period since March 2007 and then there were only 2... I have pcos and have had eating problems all my life....

However... when i went to the dr this time last year to see how i ccould get a cycle/ gynae appt... He asked if i could be pg. ( 10 hpt bfn) NO! i replied but actually I was.

You do not need to have had a period to ovulate. and HPT are not always accurate. I have a 16 week DD. PCOS.... IN YA FACE!

Just wanted to add my story here - -also have v irregular periods - prob 1 a year, 2 max.

BFP in Jan 2008 - hadn't had a period since March 2007. Saw docs, they said there were 2 possibilities:

  1. i was ovulating anyway but no period
  2. i managed to 'catch' it if it happened just the once...

I figured the longer I went without a period the greater my chances were - after about 5-6 months of trying but not manically (!!) we started to dtd every 2-3 days - was exhausting but fun... and worked...

Went to the doctor after about 7-8 months who was very happy to put me on clomid - but I was waiting for my old records to arrive from my previous surgery (we'd moved recently) and by the time they'd arrived, I had my BFP.

So my advice would be to just make time to do it as often as you can!! The longer it's been since your last period, the closer it is until your next. Stay positive :-)

smallbluestar · 25/09/2010 19:11

ps. forgot to say i also took agnus castus in the last 2 months before BFP - I swear it worked.

TTC #2 now - it feels like a lottery when everyone else has so much to go by (cycle length, ovulation kits, etc...) but am following my own advice, staying positive, dtd regularly, taking my vits, keeping happy...Will start on the agnus castus in Dec if no BFP by then

8rubberduckies · 25/09/2010 21:26

OP, obviously, when I referred to upping the dosage of Metformin yesterday I meant discussing this with your GP/gynae, not just increasing the amount of tablets you take on your own Smile

LornaSavage · 01/10/2010 15:51

thank you so much for the advice!
I have booked to see my GP and to get a referral.
So i the mean time will 'keep busy'!
Smallbluestar - that is what i have been thinking... longer its been, the closer the next period must be :)
Thegauntlet - thank u for the positivity!!

1 other question - i have not had any of the normal signs of ovulation... cld i still be ovulating? It seems that the 'normal' don't apply to PCO sufferers?

staying hopeful, trying to be patient...

Hi - same issue here.

Normal weight. On pill for 11 years. Came off it, no period. Hormone bloods normal. Pelvic ultrasound showed PCOs. HyCoSy - normal. 6 months later...one cycle of Clomid - nothing. One cycle of Letrozole - nothing. Now waiting to see my consultant as to what next.

Also on 1500mg Metformin. Not doing a whole lot really, although lost half a stone which I won't begrudge ;) (although it wasn't hugely necessary, now weigh 9st7lbs at 5'7")

Annoying being so out of control :(
