Where is my period...any advice

My last period was on the 26th July so I am nearly at day 60! I came of the pill in April and had 3 cycles ranging from 32 - 45 days, until this one.

I went to the doctor last week who said it can take a year to regulate your cycle after coming off the pill. They did a blood test to check I wasn't pregnant which came back negative.

On the day of the blood test I started to get pregnancy symptons and had a tiny amount of blood on Sat. These symtons have eased off, except my nipples are still larger than normal. I've done a couple more pregnancy tests which have been negative.

The thoughts running through my head are 1) is it still too early to test if I ovulated late could I be pregnant , 2) PCOS, 3)miscarriage or 4) is this normal and I'm being silly. I get the impression my doctor will tell me to go away and come back when I've been off the pill a year. It's really frustrating as we are TTC and I am a generally impatient person who likes to be in control! Has anyone had a similar experience or have any advice?

Autumnmeg, I could have just written your post.

I came off the pill in April (I was on Cilest) and had 2 cycles, a 39 day and 42 day and my last period started on 19th June.

I went to the doctor who did blood tests to check my hormone levels. He told me it takes almost no time at all for the pill to get out of the system, else why would we have to take it every day?

I too queried late ovulation = pregnancy, miscarriage and PCOS.

The doctor has said to just wait until next April when we have been TTC for a year then she can help.

I have no advice at all, just wantewd you to know I am going through the exact same situation.

Is your gynae history ok before this? do you have any DCs already?

Before the pill I was a very regular 28 day girl, so no gynae problems that I knew of! I was on the pill about 10 years.

No DCs and very broody!

Hi meg,

No you are not being silly at all and the GP is being too dismissive here probably due to overall ignorance of such matters.

A 32-45 day cycle would be seen as irregular as there are more than 4 days of variation from month to month. A "normal" cycle is a cycle length of between 21 and 35 days.

The pill leaves your system very quickly after you have taken the last tablet. It certainly does not take a year to regulate your cycles (silly GP!). Generally speaking cycles of over 35 days are anovulatory. If your cycles have lengthened like this and have stayed consistently long the cause should always be determined sooner rather than later.

I would ask another GP (not the one you saw before) to do some more blood tests and on this occasion have a day 2 test done. This test can be done according to calendar days so you can have this done on the 2nd of the month. This will measure and compare your LH level against that of your FSH level. Ideally these two should be the same but an imbalance, particularly if LH is higher than FSH, can be indicative of ovulation problems (and PCOS is a common culprit in that regard).

It is all too easy to be fobbed off and you will need to be persistant in order to get answers.
