Um, not sure what to make of this, no result on my opk kit. Do they work? Has anyone else had this?

Thanks ;)

What are you using? Is your cycle regular?

I think it can happen that they don't pick up the hormone surge. Have you tried following your CM? Is charting an option for you? If after a few months you aren't picking up any signs of ovulation it's probably worth going to your GP but don't rely soley on OPKs as they can be unreliable.

If using the POAS type tests (NOT digital), is there a control line?

If there are no lines at all, it normally means that the test hasn't worked and you need to do another one.

It was a text with a control line. Its my second month of charting and that doesnt pick up an ovulation either so am a bit confused. I already have one daughter and was just lucky the first time round as it happened first time. Didnt use the opk kits though.
Done lots of the opks from the same pack and nothing as yet....

I never got a positive result on an OPK.. but managed to get pregnant almost the first time I tried each time (despite no positives).

I wonder if my hormone surges were quite short so they never got picked up. I guess I am saying they don't work on everyone.

It might be one of several things:

  1. your surge is quite short and so perhaps happening between the times you're testing so by chance you've missed it - worth testing morning and evening perhaps?
  1. you're ovulating early or late in the month so not testing on the right days
  1. some people seem to find they struggle to pick up anything on those tests even when they are ovulating - might be worth trying to find a more sensitive test?
  1. you might not be ovulating - which is apparently quite common and happens to a lot of people from time to time in which case GP might be able to help.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

If it helps I had to po-loadsa-s to get a positive opk. I was using them several times a day. Each cycle I only ever got a positive just the once. Even a few hours later it was back to negative. I think the best time to use OPKs are between about 11 and 2pm.

Hi,

I never managed to get an OPK to work, never once got a positive but still conceived DD so was obviously ovulating

Headbanger · 13/09/2010 16:00

What ho. I never had any bloody positives from OPKs. Drove me mental, as I had every other ovulation symptom going. A kind soul then gave me their Clearblue Fertility Monitor and bingo, ovulating all over the place. Don't be disheartened!

beth35 · 13/09/2010 19:22

Thanks, was a bit worried but all makes sense ;) May do a more expense one next month, clareblue the best then?

Hi Beth,

I think its really worth combining OPK's with something else. I checked cervical position everyday and started using OPK's when I noticed a change, I used them morning and afternoon and got a positive in the morning just once after 4 days of use, by the afternoon it was negative again. I also took my temperature and according to that I ovulated 2 days after the positive OPK. Moral of the story is, you cant rely on them alone, but if you use it with other things they do work in that they give you a big clue as to what is going on.

I used dirt cheap (25 for 5 quid) Amazon ones, I reckon doing lots of cheap ones is better than doing one expensive one.

I do take temp too but no luck with that either as yet. I will leave it until af which is next week and research a bit more for next cycle!

I did a kit and got no positive result. I then read loads of comments on here about them not being that accurate, lots of people conceived never getting a positive on them...... I was concerned so went to my GP and found that in my case it was right, I'm not ovulating. If you are worried I would definitely go to your GP - they can do a simple blood test that could put your mind at rest.
