one day. you are most fertile in the 3 days or so before ovulation.

carriedababi · 03/09/2010 21:42

oh the egg pops out then lasts/lives for a day, is that right?

so i only did one test, but if i tested everyday for a week or more, during ovulation.

how many days would result in a postive result, saying ovulating?

no, you need to have sex before you ov. the sperm lives for up to four days and the egg (if not fertilised before it hits the fallopian tube) will be processed in menstruation. the positive test indicates a surge in hormone. however, ive never used opk's

A woman ovulated at the point that the egg releases from the ovary. The egg can stay viable for one day after this point as it travels to the womb.

so are you guys saying that there is only one day a month in which you can get pregnant?

carriedababi · 03/09/2010 22:20

pretty much mrsrb. some women release more than one egg, some will ov twice (although that is very rare) but essentially its a lot more hit and miss than sex ed would have us believe

Try reading Taking Charge Of Your Fertility.

The egg deteriorates pretty rapidly after being released and ideally a sperm will already be there waiting or will fertilise it very soon afterwards.

Since sperm can live for up to 5 days in the right conditions, sex in the days leading up to ovulation can result in pregnancy but the egg is fertilised on the day of ovulation, not the day you had sex iyswim.

Chances of conception if everything is right, you're in good health and there are no barriers to conception are around 20%.

And opks do not detect ovulation, they detect a surge in hormones.

If your cycle is irregular in nature it is likely that you are not ovulating regularly.

A "normal" cycle is a cycle length of between 21 and 35 days or with less than 4 days of variation from month to month. A 31-48 day cycle warrants further investigation.

Would suggest you forget all about using OPKs altogether (they are useless when periods are irregular anyway) and have a blood test done instead to see what your hormone levels are like. If these are awry such problems can be treated. You need to have a day 2 test done to measure and compare your LH and FSH levels. If these two hormone levels are awry then ovulation will be affected as a result.
