I am so confused and have no idea if I am pregnant or not

I had a miscarriage a month ago and felt a bit weird today so I took a pg test.
I tested positive with a first response. Absolutely crystal - no faint lines or anything.
I was completely gobsmacked and asked DH to get me a Clearblue.
Negative.

What is going on?
Could there be some hormones left in my body from the m/c?
I'm pretty sure I ovulated 2 weeks ago - all the signs - and we have "done it" quite a lot.
The plan was to let nature take its way - I'm 40 and the last pg (the mc) was a total shock as I normally don't conceive easily.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Mslucy - it could still be pregnancy hormones left over. Did you do a test after the miscarriage to see if it was negative? Was your previous m/c an early one? It is possible you are pregnant again, and some people do say that you are more fertile after a m/c. The only way to know if this is a new pregnancy is to see if the hcg levels are rising or falling. I would suggest retesting in a couple of days with another first response, to see if the test is lighter or darker, this might help answer the question.

I hope it turns out to be good news for you.

Hey galwaygal

I had a scan which showed the pregnancy had gone - there was nothing left (this came after bleeding and an earlier scan where we saw the heartbeat at 7 weeks).
M/c must have been about 8 weeks.

Will test again at the weekend - only reason I tested was because I have been invited to something very boozy on Fri and didn't want to take any chances.

All very weird.

Hi Mslusy

My m/c's at around 8 weeks (yes I have had several m/c's!) have taken about a fortnight for the the hcg to drop to nothing. My last one the scan showed all gone but the levels did not get to normal for nearly 3 weeks. I have had another m/c where it took over a month for the levels to drop to zero. That being said, I also had a (successful!) pregnancy immediately after a m/c, getting a positive test at less than four weeks after the m/c at 5 weeks.

So it is quite possible that this is a new pregnancy for you, and I hope you will post again at the weekend letting us know how your next test goes. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Smile

Hi MsLucy I keep reading time and again that clear blue tests are rubbish esp the +/- ones. Try testing again with a different brand. Hope you get the answer you want and that it sticks Grin

mslucy · 01/09/2010 19:54

the m/c was just over 4 weeks ago.
I would think nothing of it if I hadn't had such obvious ovulation signs 2 weeks ago (and such a lot of back ache/bloating).

sitting on hands at the moment and plan to do another test at the weekend.Wink

sorry to hear of your heartbreaking experiences. :-(
just to say, i have read from many people that clearblue are rubbish (not wot u'd expect 2 hear about them tho). i used 1st response with both of my pregnancies-both showed up postive straight away 1st time i tested. personally, id definately trust 1st response again.
good luck

since I first posted, I've done 3 more tests - a normal clear blue, a clear blue digital and a sainsburys own brand.
All +ve.
thought AF was here on Fri - bled from about 6pm til midnight - nothing since. Was this an implantation bleed - never had one before, but I don't think it was a period.
Test I did yesterday lunchtime (sainsburys) was +ve, but I guess that could have been a chemical pg.
Going to test again tomorrow and call the hospital - want blood tests.
Wish me luck Wink

mslucy - congratulations on your new pregnancy. The bleeding could just be an implantation bleed as you said, here's hoping they do blood tests to put your mind at rest. All the best!

mslucy · 05/09/2010 18:06

not quite ready for congratulations yet Hmm

  • guess I'm still getting over the mc and don't want to take anything for granted (ie until I have a real live baby in my arms).

I want to be positive, but a bit scared to do anything other than take every day at a time.

Having had 10 miscarriages I know what you mean about not being ready for congratulations yet. But each pregnancy I have learnt is a blessing, and even if it ends prematurely, it is a pregnancy.

I got pregnant immediately after my first miscarriage (positive test less than 4 weeks after start of miscarriage following negative test 2 weeks after m/c) I did not allow myself to dare to hope that it could be for real. Even at the 14 week scan I was convinced it was all going wrong. But my fantastic baby boy is now 2 years old. I still remember the pain of worry with the pregnancy. However I have had 9 more miscarriages (from 4 to 11 weeks) since then and now have a different view of pregnancy.

I am sorry if you felt my congratulations were a bit premature, but you are pregnant again and I hope you can find some hope soon.

I certainly hope to have a pregnancy that goes to produce a baby sometime again.

LittleSilver · 05/09/2010 21:13

just wanted to add my congratulations.

mslucy · 06/09/2010 10:45

galwaygal
you sound incredibly brave - I am in awe of you.
Tested again this morning - positive after about 1 second (line went really dark).
Tiny bit of spotting first thing - now gone.
Phoned EPU and having scan next week.
The nurse I spoke to is in no doubt that I am pregnant - so I guess I'd better get used to it.
