Sorry am on a bit of thread-starting roll today. Just wondered when you should see a GP about not conceiving and what are the chances of seeing an NHS specialist? I remember reading a thread here about GPs refusing to refer. I have a son and am 39 and overweight so would assume all these things would count against me. Have only been ttc for 3 months but the cheap ebay ovs tests I used looked like I wasn't ovulating.

It's 6 months if you are over 35. Unless you have a known medical condition - such as PCOS, partner having had a vasectomy reversal, etc.

The most accurate way to find out if you are ovulating is to start charting your temperatures rather than using ovulation kits. Charting can show not only if you're ovulating but also if you are ovulating very late or very early in the cycle, etc.

Also, have you just come off the Pill? It can take 6 months or more to ovulate again after coming off the Pill and sometimes even longer if you've been taking hte Depo Provera injections.

Hi Jane

My sister went to the docs after a year but was told 2 yrs shes early 30's. Some say a yr, some 2. i would tell them longer to get going because even then it can take a while for all the tests and appointments!!

it's 6 motnhs our way, althou my aunty had to wait 2 years b4 the dr would refer her in the south as she alread had a child, luckily she managed to fall after 18 months.

wouldn't hurt to get the ball started.

I was refered and given an appointment for 6m later, so I used a trip abroad to see a gyn. I was 2m pregnant by the time I should have got the appointment. However, I had no children and had PCOS, still the GP was so rude and horrible about my request of seeing one that I changed surgeries after that.

Would ask if your periods are irregular in nature because if they are this can have an effect on ovulation. If this is the case I would seek out your GP now and ask for a blood test to be done. This is the most accurate way of finding out what your hormones relating to ovulation are like. An imbalance of such hormones can lead to ovulatory problems that can be treated.

Do you have any other symptoms?.

It is indeed 6 months if you are over 35 years of age.

I personally would not bother with temp charting and ov kits for the reason being that both methods are not totally reliable indicators of whether ovulation has occured or not. Also a temp chart can end up looking like the Rocky Mountains and can be difficult to interpret.

The pill leaves your system very quickly after taking the last one and there is no evidence to suggest that this is responsible for failure to ovulate. Depo though is a different matter; I have heard it now said that it should not be prescribed to women unless their families are complete.

me and dp have been trying for 16 months but i had problems ttc with a previous partner for almost 3 years, saw doc yesterday and she is going to refer me to hospitalas i have had blood test and dp has had semen test and results were normal, i am 25 and have 1 dd

jane313 · 31/08/2005 17:12

thanks for the info everyone. I haven't been on pill or depo (not sure what that is!). My cycle varies from 25 to 29 days, mostly 26 though. I could always lie!

What a horrible GP you had chandra. The most chatty one in our practice has left and theres one who is very brusk and its an open surgery system, but I could find out his off days!

I did get positve results with an ovulation saliva test thing but it was bit all over the place

Jane313, would definitely recommend temping to help pinpoint ov. I found OPKs were sometimes ok, but a bit hit & miss. But I've been amazed at how obvious my ov date is with temping! Fertilityfriend.com shows you how to go about it & keeps track of your temps, CM, OPK results etc.

Which thermometer did you buy?

You need to make sure it's a BBT thermometer as this records temps to 2 decimal places. I bought mine here Early Pregnancy Website but boots do them too.
