Anyone used cheap ov kits from ebay?

I had been using an ovulation saliva test kit but after 2 months no joy so got one of thsoe 20 tests for about £10. Despite getting positives on the saliva thing I never got a +ve on any of the test sticks. Will have to fork out on the expensive ones I guess now to see if I am ovulating but I wondered if anyone had used them?

I didnt use ebays cheap ones but went straight for clearblue digi ov kits..expensive but caught on first month of using them as did 5 other people I know.

frannyf · 31/08/2005 18:15

How do the digital tests work please? Do you have to measure your temp or is it a urine thing?

Nemo1977 · 31/08/2005 18:16

urine and really simply a smiley face appears when you are oving.

frannyf · 31/08/2005 18:22

So you would just start testing when you believe you might be ovulating, and keep going till you get a positive?

Sorry, bit new to all this and can't find an old thread that covers it!

Nemo1977 · 31/08/2005 18:25

franny in the clearblue digi pack it tells you when to start testing depending on your cycle length

I bought 20 ovo test + 2 pregnancy tests from e-bay for £18. Search on thenewyou I think or ovulation midstream (although I dipped them)

With the ovo sticks ( which showed me ovulating) you need to test between around 10am - 8pm. Which I have only just found out. Still, they did the job, lets hope we managed to do ours

ionaming · 31/08/2005 22:13

I found the little cardboard stick ov tests pretty poor too. Bought a batch of the plastic cassette ones (about £10 for 15 of them) from eBay from a seller called thenewyou and they are great - got a really strong positive, even better than any of my clearblue results!

jane313 · 01/09/2005 18:35

thats interesting. Mine said you could test anytime. the clearblue digital was also quite specific. I amusing a saliva test thing too and I have had 2 separate lots of positive results. Could you ovulate twice in one cycle? The cheap tests have only ever shown a faint line (in the same 2 sets of days) which they say is a negative.

I also tested first thing in the morning (with ovo stick & persona) but have read that the morning wee, although concentrated, doesn't have the hormone surge. Anytime between noon and 8 p.m. is fine. The reason for this is that most women experience a surge in the morning, but it can take 4 hours for it to show up in your urine.

jane313 · 03/09/2005 12:02

ooh its all such a minefield isn't it? My clearblue digital says it can be any time but you must have have not urinated in the last 4 hours so that would be a pain during the day. mybe I should just have sex every day to make sure [exhausted emoticon]

Such kits measure LH levels. The problems with such kits is that they assume that women have only one rise in LH every month (not true) and that a rise in LH is immediately followed by ovulation (again not the case). If you are one of many women who are producing a higher than normal level of LH then the kit may be reading this result (hence mulitple positive results). Although such kits are tempting they are really best avoided especially if the menstrual cycle is irregular.

jane313 · 03/09/2005 18:41

how irregular is irregular? Mine have varied from 25 to 31 in the last 18 months but are mainly 26 or 27.

I got two lots of +ve results on my saliva thing in this cyle.

What would you say was the best way to know, CM? I haven't properly looked at that

MeerkatsUnite · 04/09/2005 09:37

A "normal" cycle is a cycle length of between 21 and 35 days OR with less than 4 days of variation from month to month.

The surest way you are going to know whether ovulation has occured or not in any given cycle is to have a blood test done. Your progesterone level is looked at in the later half of a cycle.

anchovies · 04/09/2005 09:40

I used a boots ov kit and have a fairly regular 28 day cycle. Tested first month from day 12, got a positive on day 13, did the deed and got a pg positive on day 25!

Never figured out the CM thing although they say if you drink grapefruit juice it becomes easier to tell.

burstingbug · 04/09/2005 09:45

Not brought ov kits, but did buy the preg test strips from 'thenewyou' on ebay and the work fine.

Mojomummy · 04/09/2005 10:26

how about Persona - quite expensive at £64 initially, then £10 a month for the strips. You could probably pick up a 2nd had one on e-bay. I think the website is persona.org.uk for the details.

Also could try fertilityfriend.co.uk - although I haven't quite got my head round this one !
