what sort of thermometer do you use if you chart your temperatures. We have a braun ear thermometer but it seems that these are not the ones to use, why?

Also has anyone bought one from ebay, there seem to be loads on there. Will they be good enough or what do people recommend here....

Hi

If you really want to temp chart an ordinary clinical thermometer from the chemist will do the job. You do not need to spend lots of money.

Just remember though that charting is not totally reliable anyway and does have its own associated problems. It can also become a daily reminder that there is perhaps a problem. If your periods are irregular in nature anyway I would not use temperature charts. You should also be aware that many docs do not use temp charts anyway due to reliability issues.

I'm getting on really well with charting. I've come across oral or vaginal thermometers being used, not ear ones. I don't know why ear ones aren't used.

I use a digital oral one from Boots, wasn't very expensive and came with full instructions and a booklet to record temps in. I'm getting on with it very well

A bit confused by Meerkat's comments - I understood that provided you take your temperature at the same time every day, temping was the most reliable way to detect ovulation.

I would agree that charting can become an additional stress in TTC - if you're the kind of person who would be bothered about fluctuations, or perhaps not having the "text book" chart it would be worth not bothering. Personally I'm using it as a way to learn more about my individual cycle, and I'm finding it fascinating My sister-in-law was TTC for a year before starting temping, and she got pregnant within 3 months of temping - she discovered that they'd been stopping BD-ing too early in her cycle each month!

Check out the fertility friend website - www.fertilityfriend.com - loads of information on charting, plus you can create and maintain your own chart for free.

Hugs,
Artoo.

I got mine from Boots - a special fertility one. the difference between this and an ordinary thermometer is that is records temp to 2 decomal places, not just one. That means very small temp changes can be recorded - which is useful for temping.

thanks for the info. Artoo, I am like you, finding it really fascinating learning all about my individual cycle:-)
