Coming off the pill next month- what do I need to know?

Hi All

Next month (after our holiday) I am planning to come off the pill as we want to TTC. I have been on the pill for 14 years (went on it when I was 14 because of bad periods) so I can't even remember what a 'normal' period feels like.

When i come off it next month, should we TTC straight away, or should we use other contraception for a while, til my body gets used to being off the pill? Would it be bad to come off the pill and (theoretically) then get pregnant straight away?

Feel a bit clueless about it all and no RL friends in the same boat so all advice appreciated.

Hi there - this thread is a little old. If you'd like to know more about coming off the pill, we've got some information here. MNHQ

Good luck notasize10butoneday and enjoy shagging for shagging's sake for a bit - it's all practice Wink

Sorry if tmi but I also found my sex drive shot up after coming off the pill, with easier orgasms - presumably just back to normal as the pill I believe can inhibit desire. Tell your DH that and it might compensate for turning into a moodwswinging loon!

Oh and if OP or anyone else is interested, this wikipedia article explains the Standard Days Method - apparently there's only a 5% chance of falling pg in a year if you follow it properly and you stick to only shagging on allocated days, ie not on days 8-19. It's reliant on you having a 26-32 day cycle. Here's a sciencey study on it too.

I have a male friend who works for a family planning charity and he was horrified to hear from my DH that we were using the SDM - apparently they spend a lot of time and resources educating people that you can fall pg at any time of the month Blush

Endometriosis is not picked up on any internal ultrasound scan as the deposits are so small.

It is usually only diagnosed through keyhole surgery, the op is called laparoscopy.

Hey, newbie here. Off pill in May but not properly trying as yet.

What I think you need to know is:

  1. You may get spots! I have a panel of under the skin spots on my forehead and jawline that appeared after coming off it.
  1. Real periods are longer and more inconvenient than the fakey ones on pill. I've gone from a light day to 5 or 6.

And PMT is much worse. Apoart from that, enjoy! it feels good to be natural for once...

Hi Guys,

Bit of a strange one I think.

I went on the Yasmin pill about 6 months ago for PMS.

My partner and I split up, and I was messing about with my pills, forgot to take a few as I wasn't having a sex life. Anyway to cut a long story short. The last pills I took, I took for too long (maybe 5 weeks rather than 3? - I have packets lying around everywhere and lost count) I came off them for my week break, during this week I had a tiny bleed but nothing like the usual period (on or off yasmin) I was waiting for a proper period, so didn't start taking my tablets again for about 10 days.

I started a new packet and as myself and my partner are back together I decided I should take them properly this time as we had resumed normal sexual activity, low and behold on the first day of us having sex, I noticed signs of ovulation.

Since then (Sun) I have been feeling very achy in the breast area, mainly nipples.

Surely if I was preg it would be too early to have any symptoms?

Or could it just be effects of the pill?

Please advise! I am 37 and should know better

I agree that endo cannot be picked up by ultrasound though endometriomas (a kind of ovarian cyst) can which is what got me diagnosed quickly. Only a lap done by an endo specialist can diagnose.

Interesting about the ovulation pain after coming off the pill - I swear I felt that egg travel every milimetre down the tube, I could hardly stand up straight for 2 days.
