IVF after miscarriage

TTC for 7 years, got pregnant for the first time and discovered at 8 weeks (which was on Wednesday) that the baby was dead and therefore had to take some pills to force a miscarriage.

Obviously am unkeen to wait another 7 years to get pg again so DH and I are planning to get IVF as soon as we possibly can. Does anyone know how soon that can be after a miscarriage?

Im so sorry for your loss Harriet75C

We were TTC for nearly 5 years; had 4 miscarriages. last one being early January this year. I had to wait for a natural period and then started down-regging in March. Had egg collection on April 1st and am now 19 weeks pregnant.

We had to go private as I was considered too old for the NHS. If you can afford it I would recommended going private as you could waste a year or two on an NHS list.

Best of luck xxx

Hi Harriet75C

Sorry so to hear about your loss, I can;t even imagine how devastating it must be after 7 years of ttc.

I would think your next step would be to see your GP, who should then refer you to see a fertility specialist, either privately or on the NHS. Either way I doubt a Dr will jump straight to IVF until they have some initial tests for both you and your husband (unless you have already had these tests done recently?) The difference between NHS and private will be how long you have to wait for appointments and tests to be done.

Do you have medial insurance? I know if you've been with BUPA for a certain amount of time they will cover fertility investigations but not treatment, so may be worth looking into.

Wishing you lots of luck

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Harriet

I have been through 4 cycles of IVF. We never conceived naturally (we had ICSI due to DH's sperm count in single figures), but we conceived on our first and second IVF cycles, which resulted in a miscarriage at 8 weeks and an ectopic/miscarriage ( a nightmare because we had two embryos put back and one developed in my tubes and the other in the regular place and we lost them both). The third cycle failed, but I am currently 12 weeks pregnant after 4th cycle, so I know the pain of conceiving after years of trying and then losing the baby.

The IVF clinic should always make you wait three natural periods before beginning the next treatment after a miscarriage, so it will depend on when your mentrual cycle settles down and the pregnancy hormone leaves your system. If you started the IVF referral process now, the soonest that you could begin down-regging drugs is after your third period.

Make an appointment at your GP for a referral. You don't say how old you are or what fertility issues (if any) meant that it took you seven years to conceive, but I would say that if you are much over 33, I would go definitely private. The NHS waiting lists are a nightmare, although we did wait and had two cycles on the NHS (and then 2 private) because that was what our PCT provided. I was 31 when we went to the GP, I'm 35 now, so it ain't a quick process. In London, a private cycle is about £5k depending on drugs prescribed and clinic chosen.

You and your partner will need to have several fertility tests before going to the main IVF clinic (cycle monitoring and checking FSH hormones etc) which take a month or two. We were at Hammersmith IVF unit, which gives you an all-inclusive price, which was a godsend when I had the ectopic and I had to have blood tests every 48 hours for two months and lots of extra scans.

best of luck

Hi there Harriet, so sorry to hear of your loss.

I had a Miscarriage and then had successful IVF on the NHS but I was already under the care of the IVF unit when I concieved the first time (with clomid) so it only took 5 months for me to start the consultation for IVF.

One thing I would say is if you are planning to go down the NHS route they will say that your ability to get pregnant last time shows you are not suffering form infertility and so the process will take longer. If you are going private then I don't think it will hinder the process.
