Hi there all,

Just a bit of background information. I am a healthy 22 year old and my DH and I are trying for DC2. However, since coming off the pill 3 months ago i seem to be having over 40 days between periods. Does this mean I'm not ovulating regularly?

I know it takes time for the pill to get out of the system and we've only been trying a couple of months but I'd really like to be able to work out when I'm due on so I know whether I'm late or not.

Thanks in advance

Ive never been on the pill but my cycles ranged from 28-42 days. We just had very regular sex + have conceived twice.

Actually the pill leaves your system very quickly after taking the last tablet.

If your periods were irregular in nature prior to taking the pill the menstrual cycle now is more likely to be irregular. BTW the pill has not caused this, such problems are often caused by hormonal imbalances. A condition called polycystic ovaries is a common culprit.

A "normal" cycle is a cycle length of between 21 and 35 days OR with less than 4 days of variation from month to month. If your cycle is consistently 42 days it may be that you are not ovulating regularly. I would therefore have a blood test done to see what your hormone levels are like. You can have a day 2 test done which will compare your LH level against that of your FSH level. If LH and FSH are out of sync then ovulation will be affected.

Thanks Atilla thats helpful, I was always told it may take months to leave your system.

I've only had two periods since coming off the pill so am going to wait til I've had a couple more to try and see a more definite pattern and then possibly look into having the blood tested like you've suggested.

My periods were all over the place before I went on the pill, they were the main reason I went on it, to try and regulate them.

I've been on the pill since I was 14 except just over a year when i fell pregnant with my DD. Went straight back on it after my post-natal check.

Hi all,
I am having tests at the moment to see why my periods are irregular after stopping the pill in my case PCOS seems likely although tests and scans have still not confirmed this am waiting for AF for yet another blood test. However the doctor did tell me that for some women although (as Attilla said) the pill leaves your body very quickly it can take up to a year for your body to remember what it has to do every month.

Any concerns though I would suggest going to the docs x

Danilou I am definitely thinking of going to the doctors, this month has been 46 days and still nothing. Apart from these dodgy periods I have no other symptoms for it to be PCOS, however I'm going to research it and definitely consider it a possibility. I have been told I have a cyst on my ovary, I also have a retroverted and bi-cornate uterus. One thing after another being a woman!!

done a bit of research, and although I dont have the visible symptoms it does sound like a possibility, going to try and get into the doctors tomorrow.

Danilou, Please keep me informed, hopefully the doctors can give you a definite diagnosis. Are you TTC?
