FSH/LH and E2 results - I don't really know what they mean, can anyone help?

Just got my test results back. Fertility clinic asked us to do these prior to getting an appointment and said they should be done within the first five days of my cycle. The bloods were taken on CD2. I am 39.

The results are apparently 'normal' but I would really like to understand the detail. Our GP won't offer any interpretation; Google is confusing the hell out of me, and it will be months before I see a specialist.

Please can someone offer insight - even if its brutal. I've seen stuff on different sites saying that ratios are important, but I don't fully understand why. Also, my E2 seems outwith the range ... what does that mean? What else should I know based on these ...?

I've typed out exactly what I have on my print-out. I assume the range the lab give is what is 'normal' for this phase of the cycle.

------

*Ref range for LH/FSH/E2 refer to early follicular phase

LH U/L 2.0 - 9.0
My result: 8.9

FSH U/L 3.0 - 10.0
My result: 5.2

Oestradiol pmol/L 75 - 140
My result: 148

Bumping for anyone with more knowledge, I believe your oestradiol level is high which could indicate a problem with ovulation...ratios are important between (LH and FSH) because of PCOS but I'm afraid I don't know if the difference between yours is outside the normal range.

Hope someone with more knowledge comes along soon.

I dont know the answer... I have my appt with consultant on 9 aug and he will be going through my results so i may be able to help then... but i know thats a loooooong time away... my bloods were taken day 2 and i was 39 then (just flipped to 40 as on Sunday!!)... so if no one else comes back, i post something post my appt...

They are within the normal range but the important thing with LH and FSH is that they need to be compared against each other. There is certainly a discrepancy here between the level of LH and FSH (these should be about the same).

Also such tests should be repeated to see if there is a pattern.

Would discuss the results further with the cons in any event.

attila Is ththe ratio because it could be a sign of PCOS? My cycles are regular and I chart and seem to be ovulating every month so I have never considered that as a possiblity.

Or can it mean other things too?

I've also been reading that high E2 can suppress an FSH result, but nowhere have I found info on how high the E2 needs to be before it can have this affect.

Do you think my FSH is a possibly accurate reading, or do you think the E2 might be high enough to impact?

I am waiting for AMH test results as well now.

The first chance we'd have to speak to a consulatnt might be in September and its pure torture not knowing for that long. I probably won't even be sent for repeat tests until then.

Would just love to know, comparatively, what other women have had and what their consultants have said.

I actually started physically shaking with shock when I started googling. So thanks for replying.

lateatwork x-post - I would really appreciate you coming back and giving feedback from your meeting. 9 August feels like a century away, but its a lot closer than maybe end of September .

Thank you all for your support.

You may not have ovulated this particular month, as I mentioned these tests should be repeated to see if there is a pattern.

I would think the results are accurate in terms of readings. However, I have PCOS and my LH/FSH ratio was a lot higher than is seen in your bloodwork (mine was about FSH 4 LH 16 and that did not alter).

Any chance at all of being seen any earlier; its just that there may be a cancellation appt you could possibly have.

No more googling either!.

HTH a bit.

Chocciechip, just to let you know that I had high E2 when I had my tests done, so did an AMH test as a precaution in case it was suppressing my FSH (these particular tests were before my IVF cycle so they wanted to make sure so they could prescribe the right doses of stimulating drugs). I can't recall quite what it was, but it was higher than your reading so try not to worry (easier said than done I know ). The AMH is a good test to have as it's coming to be viewed as the standard for testing for ovarian reserve.

Hi - I don't have any answers but was told that if I have PCOS ( I don't I just don't ovulate and not know why as NHS not test that much, waiting private referal for AMH test) that they CAN treat it. AMH test perhaps more reliable test.

If you are private can you ask for earlier apt? (My NHS not test AMH so guessing you are or if not a different area). Or phone up and ask if you can talk to a nurse on the phone - they can be quite useful.
